The Official Tigers 2011 Thread

don wert...lol...couldn't think of his name. speaking of no hitting, remember eddie brinkman? when he played for the senators he hit about .200 over his whole career. ted williams became the manager for 1 year (i think), and steady eddie hit .280.

or, maybe you're thinking of tommy matchick. he was more of a utility player.

Eddie Brinkman and Pete Rose played at the same high school together. Believe it or not, Eddie was considered the better prospect during high school. I always liked slick fielding players like Eddie and Aurelio Rodriguez. Eddie was a vacuum cleaner and Rodriguez had a rifle for an arm

Eddie and Aurelio came to the Tigers in the Denny McClain trade with the Senators along with Joe Coleman. What a heist. Coleman won 20 games and Roriguez and Brinkman were the left side of the infield for the Tigers for 5 years.

Ted Williams managed the Senators and Rangers from 1969 to 1972. The Senators actually had a winning record in '69. The McClain trade ruined them.

didn't eddie have the record for errorless games at ss (72 i think) until ripken broke if with that "overturned" error after the game had ended? sound correct?

that would be sweet but there annual payroll is 207 million dollars and ours is only 123 million i know illitch has got a fat wallet but the yankees were halped out by the city of new york to maintain there payroll i dont invision detroit doing the same for the tigers

Hey Jim and Swifster thanks for the walk down memory lane.........wait I'm not that fucking old.

We should just hire in the yankee's team. Then we could at least make the playoffs.

Have you looked at their team? They are getting OLD. They have an crazy payroll and the Tigers are a Blue collar team, not a White collar Wall Street team.

the george kell reference at 3b should have tipped you off. he played 3b from '47-'52........and yes, i'm fucking old......lol...i ran home from school to hear the scores of the '68 world series games. #5 jimmy northrup, aka the gray fox, ftw......

Carlos Guillen will be the DH. He still has one year left on his contract. The Tigers were losing $75M off the books, but they aren't spending all of that. I'd guess they'll spend another $35M for next season. With Inge's signing, they now will have approximately $29.5M. They haven't official picked up Peralta's option yet ($7M). The payroll target will probably be around $85M. Pick up Peralta's option and it leaves approximately $22.5M to spend. I can see them going after Adam Dunn or Jayson Werth . They aren't going after Crawford.

Old dudes rule! Jim, your just a little older than I am. I missed the '68 team, and didn't really get baseball in '72. I started following them in '74, and saw Kaline hit his double in Baltimore for hit #3000. They also finished last in '74 & '75. But I stayed up every night Mark Fidrych pitched. I found the transistor radio I used to hide in bed during the late games. I'll always remember Ernie and Paul Carey.

The Tigers resigned Jhonny Peralta today. I don't get it. They delined his one year option for $7M and resigned him for two years and $13M. WTF? I like one year at $7M. What did they really save. I like Dombrowski, but this just doesn't make sense to me.

I'm ok with the Peralta signing. He's a solid SS which we haven't really had in some time and he's decent at the plate. Not really a whole lot of SS options out there either. Hopefully we can trade Carlos "Paper Mache" Guillen for some new flat tops to cook cheese steaks on. I really don't give a shit what happens to him but I'm sick of him coming off the DL and bumping players that are doing well only to get hurt 5 games later. Just give him his papers a la Dontrell and Nate.

Brennan Boesch needs to figure out his bat and I'd be ok with him staying up. I think he went 2-for-August.

I think the idea with Guillen is DH only. Of course when he gets hurt, it's usually running the bases...

tigers will sign Victor Martinez for catcher, avila will be a back up again. cause adam dunn will go to the cubs for 4yrs 40mil i bet, where he can play first base still and not have to dh, tigers will put an offer in for crawford but wont get him (most likely wont, still a chance) cause the angels can offer more, they will most likely resign Magglio for cheaper, raburn will be the other corner OF, Boesch wont even make the team opening day, he has way to much to prove, spring training is not enough time to do that, plus the tigers have already said that about him. also Guillen will be the DH as of right now but if we are lucky they will sign one or trade for one. thats just my prediction at this time for next season.

but hopefully they do something good, cause i got season tickets this year!!!!!!!!

Well, since the last post, the Tigers have gone shopping. They've signed Joaquin Benoit for 3 years and $16.5M and Victor Martinez (pending a physical) for 4 years and $50M. I'm kind of iffy on both of these.

Benoit has had one good year and the Tigers gave out a three year contract on a relief pitcher. Relief pitchers normally get no more than a two year contract. The money isn't much, but length...

The next question is if Victor Martinez is worth $12.5M per year. The guy is 31, he is mediocre defensively and his two positions are C and 1B. I'm thinking the Tigers and the fans will see him DH'ing and playing a bit of outfield after the first year. And where does Avila fit in all of this? I'd rather have seen the Tigers go after Jayson Werth instead and leave Avila behind the plate.

I think this paves the way for Magglio Ordonez to return in right with a rotation of young guys in left. If they spend anymore 'large' money, it will be on a starting pitcher for the 4th or 5th spot. This could also get done via a trade.

Yes they will. So you're wrong.

Are we betting another steak dinner on this?

We can after he signs.

So Dan owes me a steak after Carl Crawford signed with Boston...Pay up bitch!

The Tigers signed Maggs for 1 year and $10 which wasn't completely unexpected. Know they just need an everyday left fielder. I'd love it if they could get Vladimir Guerrero for a year or two to play left. But I think barring a trade, the Tigers are done shopping.
