Cop shot and killed in Oak Park

There's a manhunt right now for the gunman who shot and killed an Oak Park police officer.

It happened just after midnight, in the area of 10 Mile and Greenfield.

We're told Officer Mason Samborski, a 4-year veteran of the force, was conducting a traffic stop involving a teenager. The officer then took the suspect to a nearby apartment comlpex for further investigation.

Officers say there was a struggle in the hallway, leading to the fatal shooting.

Right now, police are looking for a 16-year-old suspect identified as Jonathon Belton.

The officer's gun is still missing

It sucked when I heard on the news this morning but it really hit home when I got to work and officer after officer came in all teary eyed.

This happened within a couple hundred yards of my Dunkin, they been going through everything looking for the weapon.

I hope they "find" the kid dead, WTF over driving violation :(

doesnt sound like a routine traffic stop..."took the kid to a nearby apartment complex for further investigation?...."

what cop does that?

I'm guessing since the kid was 16 he was driving after hours and he was bringing him home to his parnets to let them deal with him rather than taking him to jail.

Just a guess, but IMO he was being nice to the kid and ended up dead. I'm thinking no cop will be nice again after this.

I dont get it, you call home from the side of the road and make the parent come pick him up form the back of the car or the station. But going into these jacked up apt complexes, solo I am guessing, is not too smart.

and how the hell does a cop lose his gun?

thats just a bad deal there.

ummm, you get killed, then the guy who killed you takes it...

"your unsnapped there officer" -shooter

No, I mean when you are standing with a suspect dont you protect your strong side? Kindof like dribbling in front of the defender??

My reading was he was killed with his own gun.

I could just be worng but 4 years and he had the balls to go to 10 and greenfield

It didn't say he was killed with his own gun, he could have been though.

Hindsight is 20/20 & you don't normally think a 16 yr old kid is going to shoot you. He may have known the kid or his parents Oak Park is pretty small only 30k people and covers only 5 square miles.

BTW 10 and Greenfield isn't that bad of an area go down a mile or two and than I would start to worry.

JFYI 10 and greenfield is that bad. The decresed housing stock pushes the hood out there.

I am sorry for assuming about the officer, when we know its not his fault he has to patrol ALONE. How much crap could be avioded if there was mandatory 2 officers/car.

sounds pretty shady to me everytime ive been pulled over and a cop wanted to further investigate like search my car they call for another car

were does it say that he was taking the kid home

Why is everyone assuming? Who cares, a man was shot doing his job :( Stop bickering about how, when, why, where. Jesus, you people are hell of detectives. :shake:

x2

There is a lot of people here who assume the whole entire story and make false accusations before the whole story comes out.

R.I.P and godspeed to the fallen officer :(

Really, since I'm here everysingle day I can say it's hardly the hood, is it Bloomfield hills no but it's no 8 mile and greenfield.

The kid lived at 10 mile and greenfield you can see the apartment complex from the intersection so he probably could see his apt.

ansd it doesn't matter what he did you should not be shot for doing your job regradless of what someone thinks you should have done or shouldn't have done.

I can tell you I walk in that area alone all the time and have never had one issue.

dude where do you live?

10 and greenfield is not a bad area, I grew up in oak park at 9 and rosewood area, that area might have gotten a little dicey, but 10 and greenfield I don't think so, yes it is only 2 miles from the city, but you don't hear any more crime coming from that area then you do from other areas in that close proximity of detroit. I am not saying that 10 and greenfield is crime free, but its not an area that I would avoid all together, if it was such a bad area, my wife would not be working for Ken.

10 and greenfield is all Jews. Maybe the cop took the kid to an abandoned building and tried to rape him...anything could have happened

its not all jews, there is a very large orthodox jewish community there but that is east of greenfield, there are also alot of arabs, blacks, and white trash there too, I am not saying that they are all bad either.
but it is a very diverse area.

We go from "Cop gets killed in line of duty" to shit like this is 16 posts???

Unbelievable......

I live in Detroit. I can see the packard plant. its safe to walk thru there :)

I have see worse thing happen out there than in my "bad" hood. There used to be projects in Detroit, they are gone...where do you think these people went? These fringe areas are super dangerous bc you think hey its southfield, I;ll just take this kid home.

Warren-yuck
Taylor-going south
Southfield
Sterling heights

all places that 5-10 years ago you would have never thougth...I heard more stories this year about guys getting there wheels/tires stolen from their suburban driveways than guys who are in Detroit.

I just read the post and was like WTF...kind of like a street racing story, you feel sorry for the kids who get hurt but then you cant help but see the errors of what they were doing.

I would hope a story like this keeps other young offices from taking chances.
