American Axle strike....

thats the way i see it. you've got "unions" then there is the "UAW". to totally different things.

That is such a huge misconception too. When I told people I got a union job, most said stuff like "you have it made" and crap like that. The UAW reputation has caused the general public to lump all unions together. I work for a union company at a UAW controlled site. The UAW hates us because we can do a better job in 1/4 the time. They feel we are taking their jobs, and I guess we kinda are......

i think the only definition of job security is doing your job quicker, better and cheaper than the next guy.

Better put that picket sign down and go back to work....

:lmao: Dude, where ever you're getting your info from, you either need to read slower or pay more attention when you read. #1 Ford is no longer offering buyouts, and #2 not EVERYONE was eligable for the max of $140,000 for walking away. That's 140k with nothing else. No benefits, no nothing. You had to have a certain amount of years of service w/the company (like 25+ and be atleast 55) to even qualify for that. The most Ford ever offered to it's workers to retire w/benefits and their pensions was $50,000 to non-trade workers and $70,000 to skilled workers and again you had to be eligable to retire. The most you could get for walking away and not being old enough to retire was 100k. That severed you ties with the company completely. Ford has not yet offered any buydowns to get a bonus and keep your job at a lower 2 tier rate. Don't think they will either. I'm 99% sure that GM workers were offerd the same, and had to qualify by years of service just like at Ford.

Oh, and like I said before in case you missed it, Visteon DOESN'T make axles.

Damn dude, I guess I've been reading about the AA strike. It looks like you are stilling living in Fords past. That shit is old news. AA is looking for a differnet kind of deal. They want to buy people out and then let them keep their jobs at $15. AA is not offerring anyone any benefits to retire. I think you are confused.

And yea, Visteon doesn't make axles, but they took a pay cut so they could compete in the markets they were in. Do you see the connection or do I need to draw you a simple stick figure picture?

-Geoff

Better put that picket sign down and go back to work....

Oh boy its going to get ugly. Visteon just built a plant in Highland park non-UAW tier-2 wages and they had a shit ton of applicants for production positions. I think AAM might be following in thier footsteps. I still remember the free press strike and all the scab signs... ugh...

And Visteon did make axles. Ford took back Sterling Axle from Visteon in a deal a year or two ago.

Yeah, that included my father.:crap:
It was tough seeing the union get broken and how it affected him.

It's like the arrogant leading the retarted.....

Can someone explain to me how a factory worker should expect to make as much as a Bachelor of Science in Nursing - Registered Nurse makes?

Some of my favorite Quotes...

"Executing a replacement strategy is unlikely because UAW workers at General Motors Corp., American Axle's former owner and largest customer, would most likely refuse to build vehicles with parts made by substitute workers, said Harley Shaiken, a labor professor at the University of California-Berkeley."

"The typical factory worker at American Axle makes $28 per hour, plus health care and retirement benefits."

"I'm just prepared to stay on the picket line as long as it takes to make sure we get a fair shake out of this deal."

And Visteon did make axles. Ford took back Sterling Axle from Visteon in a deal a year or two ago.

No shit sherlock I work there.

Thats awesome news. Great to see.

The workers are going to turn on the union, now that they're losing thier jobs.

Great news.

Still don't get it I see.

GOOD!

I see you convienently overlooked this question...
Can someone explain to me how a factory worker should expect to make as much as a Bachelor of Science in Nursing - Registered Nurse makes?

How can any person say that someone is over paid when they aren't the one signing the paychecks?

Are you signing any UAW workers paychecks?

I'm not sure how this correlates with my question.

I asked why a AA factory worker should expect to make the same wages a Registered Nurse does...why are you asking me about paychecks and being overpaid?

No, I'm not signing any UAW paychecks.

How can any person say that someone is over paid when they aren't the one signing the paychecks?

Are you signing any UAW workers paychecks?

Obviously the person signing the paychecks thinks the workers are over paid and is trying to do something about it so asking that question in response to why should these people make as much as an R.N. isn't really valid.

It's pretty simple economics. At one point, the salaries were realistic to some degree. However, the rest of the country is in a recession, the companies need cheaper labor. All of you that complain about buying foreign and then supporting the union are contradicting yourselves whether you acknowledge it or not.

The only way to keep work in America is even we become competitive on labor. Labor costs need to come down to do that.

It sucks for people who have built a style of living around their higher wages, and I feel for you. However, you do have to think of the larger picture. You will need to make personal sacrifices for the greater good of keeping costs down to help keep America from bleeding all it's work out to other countries.

Right on B. I'll say something here that I have said many times before. The wages used to be competetive when everyone in the auto industry paid them. The problem is that Toyota, Nissan, Honda, BMW, Hyundai, etc... have built plants in the US and the UAW HAS FAILED TO ORGANIZE THEM. This has led to an erosion of the base wage.

The UAW leaders have sat back fat dumb and happy instead of working like a dog to organize these plants. If they were all union and paid equally, there wouldn't be concessions like this. But Detroit can't compete on a level playfield when the competition is paying workers 1/2 what they are. The UAW has nobody to blame but itself.

-Geoff

WOW. Here comes the real world. If the UAW doesn't negotiate now, they're about to get an ass kicking.
