My brain tells me to get the Gallardo. Why? To be honest, mainly because I am so infatuated with the way the car looks. Not for other people, but for me. But like some of you have stated, maintenance costs, driveability, etc are things to consider. Like I said, I am not rich and I don't want to rack up BS costs on the car.
Look, don't listen to what anyone who doesn't have extensive experience in any car tells you about that particular car. If people think the Gallardo isn't a really high performance car, they are nuts. No it is not monstrous in a straight line, but it doesn't need to be. I did 2k in that car after 2k in a GTX1 back to back on intense roads. The GTX1 would whoop the ass off the Gallardo in a straight line, but when you're hauling ass around a road course or a set of good mountain roads, they are alot closer than you think. Even if it wasn't, it's focused, intense, and makes you get out grinning from the aural assault. The only way you can judge is to get behind the wheel yourself. If you love the way you car looks, and you end up loving the way it drives (which pretty much anyone would), and you've got the cash, why not? I thought the G was probably a bit b.s before I drove it. It's not.
There's an enormous sweeping road that runs off the PCH near Laguna Beach, and I pretty much made the passenger think we were dead on arrival from carrying so much speed through it. I kept thinking "well, we're either going to flip or this thing has more grip than an industrial vice". It was just insane how fast you can whip that car through big bends. I've driven/owned my share of Corvettes, and even though they may be forced into doing it, they won't like it, and you won't have nearly as much fun doing it. Even at high speed in a straight line, the G is
significantly happier than any Corvette I've ever been in.
Your other option is to just buy an older car and TT it. If you are interested in doing that, let me know and I will hook you up with Heffner. He can reliably get you well over 500rwhp (and up to 700rwhp) in a 3400lb car with AWD. The people at Sant'Agata were so impressed with his stuff that they gave him an absurd deal on a car just so he could have one as a permanent shop car to promote the G. I've never been in one of his G's, but I trust him, and I've pummeled one of his 850rwhp GT's, and the guy just knows his shit.
None of this is to say that the Corvette won't undoubtedly be a shitload faster in every respect. I'm sure it will break all kinds of records. But decisions based on just what a magazine number says really sell short how impressive a car like the Gallardo is from behind the wheel. Everybody already knows you can build anything that beats everything else for cheap. But I'd be bummed if that was the only criteria or cars like the 430, G, R8, 997 GT3RS, etc wouldn't exist.
