$2k drag car build? No Mustang, no LS.

Find an old truck.
Usually a strong rear end, usually a strong transmission, usually a V8. and Spray the hell out of it. The trans and rear end should hold up.
Remove all excess weight. (bumpers, passenger seat, heater core, spare tire bracing, tailgate, etc....)

The turbo idea's are nice, but expensive.

junkyard parts, so use the stock exhuast piping to weld up a hot and coldside, all you are out is time and welding gas. Does welding gas come out of the 2k budget?

Ranger, s-10, dakota, F-150, c-1500, 1500 ram. There all good choices i think for doing a truck. Engine wise 302 all they way i think. Maybe..Maybe a 318/360.

i have a lead on a 95 f150. I'm sure the owner would take $1000 for it...
short bed, reg cab 5 speed I6

I found a 2wd F250 with a 460 for $700 that needs a rad. Only issue is its a manual, which is normally embrace but for a strict drag truck, not beneficial. It would at least need a better clutch.

I'm leaning towards a Maverick/Pinto/Fairmont with a 302 and a bottle. Welding gas, filler rod, and most material will be free.

My wife has a 351 Windsor sitting in the garage at her parents house if that somehow ends up as your engine route. Not sure what she wants for it but I know we want to sell it.

Any clue what it's out of? It's it happens to be a roller motor I'm in.
