$2k drag car build? No Mustang, no LS.

Yeah, cheap LS motor definitely refers to Gen III/IV small block and not engines with an actual LS# RPO code. 4.8's and 5.3's are the cheap ones but it doesn't matter. They still hold a crap load of power and take a lot of abuse.

Idk, I did some looking on 5.3's and 6.0s thru the junkyard and anything that ran was 1000+ for the motor only with a gillion miles

When I had my Tahoe I paid $450 for a 90k mile 5.3 complete. But then again I got it from a buddy that owns a few junkyards but still, they are out there.
And miles really don't matter a whole lot on these motors as they usually go 300k+ with proper maintenance.

Ford Focus - RWD V8 kits are available. Copy it low buck style. A small block Ford Focus would be light, fast and a short wheelbase handful.

Low Buck Locost - Track only, grab a good rear, trans, engine and add tubing as needed. I've been thinking about the stripped Vette ala' Roadkill. Pick up a cheap beat C4, strip it, drop in an old school 350 and spray.

Imports? RX7 V8

Building a car that is worth a fuck for 2k is a stupid pipe dream. You aren't going to Ls swap anything for 2k unless everything is given to you and in that case its not a real world scenario.
