Vortec 4200 I-6 Turbo IROC-Z

We did some tuning friday with interesting results. It makes 10psi even with the 6psi spring in the gate.. It maxes out the MAF at 5000rpm in boost and goes into a reduced power mode, pulls timing, limits the drive by wire throttle body from opening 100%.

We will try putting the MAF into a 4" pipe and working from there. maybe even make it a draw through MAF.. Or try an LS7 piece.

It's a riot until it reduces power... :(

Trying a 4" draw through setup.. Not sure if it's scaled at all. They guy tuning set it up for 80lb injectors To run at stock pressure(58psi) and now tweaking the MAF so it's happier. Hopefully it leaves room for porting and more cam in the future.

cant you scale the MAF so its not maxed?
I love this project...different and boosted!

I think he means it maxed out based on the frequency. If you go to a bigger tube you can recal the maf table to get read higher flows.

Denny, you know I'm a Ford guy. Your project has me daydreaming about an early '60's Nova 4 door (or even a wagon!).
I salute you for the concept and execution!! Very, very cool!

Thanks! I'd like to do an old car build too, or truck. I have been eyeballing 40's trucks myself.

Update. 4" draw through MAF worked well. It's now reading 60lb/min of air at 10psi/6600rpm, double what a stock engine inhales at 6300. After some tuning, it has great throttle response, idle, and a lack of traction. Hoping to make a few pulls at Livernois soon after buttoning up the A/W plumbing.

This is one of my favorite builds...turbo, stright motor (like the old days :)) and EFI....its so different and cool.

Bewbies!!! Denny was just showing this to a co-worker he has a 66 chevy truck with a 235 stove bolt. I said keep it a straight six.......he dident understand till I brought him to this thread :)

Cool! Point him toward the vortec4200.com forum plenty if builds in progress.

We have been chipping away at the tune. The 80lb injectors are no longer pouring fuel at idle or cruise..much leaner. Still 10psi with a little meth. nozzle. In 20 degree weather, a bit of tirespin, it's doing 0-60 in 4.2 seconds. Top of third gear(6500rpm) is ~125mph...That's kind of my quarter mile goal.. I also managed to "lose control" of the road in first gear and buzzed past 7400rpm once... :) Angry little bugger and no harm done yet!

I've always wanted to do one of these, but once I found the 4.2L weighs as much as an Aluminum LS, I started to cool on the idea. That said, an old early 60's Biscayne or other low-option car of that era would be sleeperiffic..

did I just type sleeperiffic?

this is sweet. id love to see a turbod envoy or something

There was a twin turbo 4.2 Trailblazer built as the original TBSS back in 02 or 03. Boost was torque limited to 400ft-# but it made that from 2k-5500. Only got to drive it once but it was pretty sweet.

Great build! I had this same idea awhile back and thought the engine would be too tall...guess not. Do you have a pic of the entire engine bay with the turbo installed?

Denny, glad I talked to you. This thing is cool and yeah I think I read about it a year ago but haven't kept up. I've always been a straight six fan going back to my first couple of cars in the 70s. It's cool to be different sometimes.

Good times as usual. :)

Update:

414rwhp/390lbft @ 9.5psi was made at Livernois Motorsports. 3 pulls, all over 400hp and no tuning done yet. Meth kit is flowing a 6gph nozzle but tuning it is still to come, hopefully an extra 25-50hp with more timing and nailing down the A/F ratio.. It's yet to be recorded and I'm still running stock OEM sparkplugs.. Crappy cell phone videos to come..It wails like a banshee.. Thanks for sponsoring the motown picnic Livernois! Thanks Andy, sorry for the child size, kidney crusher, Corbeau seat.. :)
