You are absolutely correct. When I had my SCCA Suzuki race car, I offered to race all comers, but I would get the right to pick the track. You'd be suprised how well a 130 HP Suzuki will fair against Camaros and Mustangs on a road course.

Or as a wise man once said, "It is not how fast you go, but how you go fast".

ROFLMAO!!!

I'm far from against cars. I just don't see the need for 500hp on the street. And if you need 500hp on the street, then your driving isn't that good.

I was about to post something similar until I saw your post.

Thank god in this country we can collect almost whatever we want, and we can do it just because it's cool.

Here is mine...

I was attempting to be sarcastic to prove a point, but I guess I just used it to realize that you're a dolt.

First off there is a lot of ignorance and genuine fear of these weapons.
People will say "what do you need an assault weapon for?". This is damn near Pavlovian and due to either plain old lack of knowledge or years of media conditioning that certain guns are bad, that somehow the pieces of copper and lead that come from them are more evil, more deadly or able to do more damage than good 'ol wholesome deer rifles. The favorite deer rifle around these parts is the 30.06 or thirty-ought-six to those phonetically challenged. It has vastly more power, nearly twice the energy on impact that any of the guns below have. Bullets for it are available in every gas station above the knuckles in the mitten that is Michigan.

All that potential for evil, millions of HIGH POWERED RIFLE 30.06 ammo, why is it not fretted the way an AK and it's moderately powered little rounds are? Ignorance.

So then the ignorant will say, "it's not the power, it's the high capacity mags" and "if you need more than 5rds you should not be allowed to hunt". Well hunting regs are very specific about that, 5rds is all you are allowed to hunt with and I follow that law. 5rd mags are available for all these guns. The larger capacity mags are for "uses other than hunting" so therefore the argument of theirs that you don;t need them for hunting is irrelevant because you don't use them for hunting. If their mind is so limited that a gun or part not used for hunting is not to be owned they clearly have no clue as to the very nature of firearms ownership, the core of it which has absolutely nothing to do with hunting. There is the housewife FEAR "AK's will shoot through schools" and then the Liberal FEAR "AK's will shoot through limos" and the Bubba FEAR "AK's will scare liberals and get them to ban mah deer rifle" and the Old guy at the range FEAR "AK's will get my skeet gun banned, you don't need them"

I have run into and battled every possible level of AK ignorance and fear, just bringing it on home my friends, can I get an amen

AMEN.

WHat is a good one to look to buy?? I want one but I dont want some junk, and this way I kind of know what to look for if I see one.

Good threads postban, the ar-15 is cool too, I just am on a AK budget:)

Lot to pick through, several calibers, fixed stock, underfolders, side folders, wood stocks, poly stocks, metal stocks, ammo availability and price, magazine availability and price, optic plate or not. Another choice is stamped receiver or milled receiver, no accuracy difference, just weight with the milled being heavier.

Generally the good ones are those that came in whole instead of hacked together here. They usually require nothing but ammo and good mags to run for a lifetime. I will tell you what to look out for, many Romanian SAR and WASR guns have incorrectly installed Gas Blocks and front sights, check em bofore buying. Alot of them have poor geometry trigger components that slap your trigger when firing (can be fixed). WASR guns can allows mags to wobble because of no dimples also jam because they only have a 10rd mag feed ramp.
Also avoid anything that says HESSE, Vulcan or Century Arms generally. Also watchout for homebuilt guns unless you know the guy. Never buy any AK that is "screw built". MISR guns also have a bad rep.

New factory AK's from Arsenal are the current best new guns, pricey but worth it in quality and longevity. Lancaster has many fans on the boards. Global Trades has a tolerable rep, some turds out there though. Ohio Rapidfire makes some SWEET looking rifles, great rep too.

Used or older guns are abundant, many gems. Any Polytech, Maadi Steyr Maadi RPM, Maadi ARM, Clayco, GSAD, Norinco, MAK90, MAK91, NHM90, NHM91, Romanian WUM, Russian VEPR...... yummy.

Best value on the market in 7.62 are the pre-ban chinese, thicker receivers and bbls with decent accuracy, great triggers and compatibility with any mag.

Go through this thread, see what you like http://www.akforum.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=373
may have to register, not sure.

Price points;
7.62 ammo is up to $200 a case (1000rds)
223 is near $400 a case
5.45 is $120 a case

7.62 mags are everywhere for <$10 (30 rd milspec surplus)
5.45 mags are 3 for <$12 lots of places
223 depends on the guns, $15-35

7.62 jumps up when you fire, good recoil, you know you shot a gun
223/5.45 are near motionless when fired (doesn't feel like you did anything)

223 is typically most accurate, 2-3" (5 shots 100 yards, iron sight rested)
5.45 is hit or miss, 3" or +5"
7.62 is commonly 4"+, rare to be under that.

You wanna hunt, get a 7.62 for deer or a 223/5.45 for varmints.

You wanna blast and make holes, and enjoy freedom and make liberals miserable, flip a coin.

They are cheaper to shoot right now. I like em both.

My reason being is that the AK-74 was designed to be compatible with the NATO 5.56mm round that we currently use in our M16 series weapons. They can fire our round, but we can't fire their round.

Those crazy Soviets sure were not dummies.

ummm, no. There is no compatibility, it is in a different caliber entirely. Also in order to chamber the 223 or 5.56x45 they must change bolts/barrels/trunnions and especially magazines anyway.

The AK74 is 5.45x39 caliber which uses specifically tumbling or yaw in tissue as its designed wounding method. Does not typically upset or fragment.

The M16 uses 5.56x45 ammo , specifically the M8555 or M856 tracer which is designed to yaw and then fragment in tissue.
