SKS?
...
Negative, SKS is a semiauto 7.62x39, that gun is a bolt action, try again.
SKS?

ummm, no. There is no compatibility, it is in a different caliber entirely. Also in order to chamber the 223 or 5.56x45 they must change bolts/barrels/trunnions and especially magazines anyway.
The AK74 is 5.45x39 caliber which uses specifically tumbling or yaw in tissue as its designed wounding method. Does not typically upset or fragment.
The M16 uses 5.56x45 ammo , specifically the M8555 or M856 tracer which is designed to yaw and then fragment in tissue.

My second guess is .303 Lee-Enfield (sp?). I guessed SKS because it had that little clip himp on the bottom.

...snip... We put NATO rounds in the AK-74 and it fired with no problems.
Also not trying to start an argument but a 223/5.56 will not fit in a 5.45 chamber. You must have fired a 5.56 chambered AK74
What did the bullet look like, long and pointy=5.45, short and pointy=5.56
Wait, OK, I realize this was a long time ago, but I know for a fact I personally fired my standard issue M-16 ammo thru an AK-47 we "recovered" while I was in Viet Nam. This was after we fired all of the AK-47 ammo thru it, of course...
I assume it was a Russian built AK, but it may not have been. I don't know anything more than we could use our ammo in the AK and it worked just fine, even on full auto....
...snip...
Much respect for your service.
...but
damn is that hard to believe. Brass cased 5.56 working fine on full auto in a 7.62x39 chamber. I know that it will fit (with the force of the bolt smashing the shoulder of the 5.56 ammo into the leade of the 7.62 cal chamber but the case heads are different diameter, a lot different. The 5.56 case would balloon out to fill the unsupported area around the case body, case neck possibly split because the the tiny 223 bullet meandering down a 30 cal bore, extremely poor gas sealing, potential to fire out of battery. The 7.62 extractor would not reach far enough to grab the 5.56 rim unless it was angled:eek5: to the right side of the 7.62 chamber. Primer hits would be off center unless just plain lucky and about a semi truck full of other reasons it should not work. Diameter of rounds is different enough so that 223 will not stay put when loaded in a 7.62 mag
You could get it to work in an extreme circumstance for single shots but be ready with cleaning rod and hammer. The full auto thing, wow.
Wanna try it again?
...snip... and do you think that I was just 19, lots of pot at the time ($1 for several oz), had anything to do with it? ...snip...
Now I was gonna suggest altered recollection due to imbibement but refrained. Accusing a vet of being baked all to fuck is not something I take lightly, lol.
Several ounces huh, what did you guys use for munchies since there were no Doritos?
:chairfall
my ak, dad got it when he first moved here in the 70's.. gave it to me. i think its chinese made
