The AK47 Thread

ummm, no. There is no compatibility, it is in a different caliber entirely. Also in order to chamber the 223 or 5.56x45 they must change bolts/barrels/trunnions and especially magazines anyway.

The AK74 is 5.45x39 caliber which uses specifically tumbling or yaw in tissue as its designed wounding method. Does not typically upset or fragment.

The M16 uses 5.56x45 ammo , specifically the M8555 or M856 tracer which is designed to yaw and then fragment in tissue.

I'm not trying to start an argument here, but my job in the Army is that of a weapons specialist/technician. I went to school at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland earlier this year and one of the subject we covered was this very subject, because my job covers not only NATO weapons but AK47s, AK74s, RPGs, etc. We put NATO rounds in the AK-74 and it fired with no problems.

It wasn't an ak74 then. The AK74 was created in reply to the USA's m16 .223 round. It was the same diamter, but it was the standard russian 39mm length instead of the NATO's 45mm.

And that gun on the back looks like a mas1936,

its gonna fire 7.5french

Also not trying to start an argument but a 223/5.56 will not fit in a 5.45 chamber. You must have fired a 5.56 chambered AK74

What did the bullet look like, long and pointy=5.45, short and pointy=5.56

This is a 5.45, very different apearance than 223

Wait, OK, I realize this was a long time ago, but I know for a fact I personally fired my standard issue M-16 ammo thru an AK-47 we "recovered" while I was in Viet Nam. This was after we fired all of the AK-47 ammo thru it, of course...

I assume it was a Russian built AK, but it may not have been. I don't know anything more than we could use our ammo in the AK and it worked just fine, even on full auto....

No 3 round bursts for us, EVER! Full Auto, BABY..I still get hard thinking about full auto :) I always loved all of the weapons and explosives. We were never shy about blowing shit up and firing whenever we could, without the fear of being discovered. The M-79 grenade launcher was lots of fun to just blow shit up with and so were the Claymores. Det Cord was also fun to wrap around things and blow it up. The 20mm cannons were some of the coolest things around, but you couldn't carry that on your back. But, I still think the best weapon I ever got to experience was the Mini-Gun. I never got to fire one, but we would call them in...You could hear it wind up, as they were flying overhead and see shit start flying everywhere. Nothing was moving in an area once it was cleared! Soo bad-ass....

Gary.......

Much respect for your service.

damn is that hard to believe. Brass cased 5.56 working fine on full auto in a 7.62x39 chamber. I know that it will fit (with the force of the bolt smashing the shoulder of the 5.56 ammo into the leade of the 7.62 cal chamber but the case heads are different diameter, a lot different. The 5.56 case would balloon out to fill the unsupported area around the case body, case neck possibly split because the the tiny 223 bullet meandering down a 30 cal bore, extremely poor gas sealing, potential to fire out of battery. The 7.62 extractor would not reach far enough to grab the 5.56 rim unless it was angled:eek5: to the right side of the 7.62 chamber. Primer hits would be off center unless just plain lucky and about a semi truck full of other reasons it should not work. Diameter of rounds is different enough so that 223 will not stay put when loaded in a 7.62 mag

You could get it to work in an extreme circumstance for single shots but be ready with cleaning rod and hammer. The full auto thing, wow.

Wanna try it again?

Ooopps..I meant to say our M-60 ammo....LOL...I did originally qualify my original statement by saying it was a long time ago (1970) and do you think that I was just 19, lots of pot at the time ($1 for several oz), had anything to do with it? But, I was raking in about $90 CASH every 2 weeks! Where is my mosquito repellant, anyway?

Now I was gonna suggest altered recollection due to imbibement but refrained. Accusing a vet of being baked all to fuck is not something I take lightly, lol.
Several ounces huh, what did you guys use for munchies since there were no Doritos?

:chairfall

Haha...I can tell you that the first thing to go from the "C" Rations was the candy and chocolate which was terrible, by the way...We always had room for our dope in our 70 pound Rucksacks.......Priorities, you know...

You know the first thing we did when we got up in the morning is Fire One Up! It would be raining cats and dogs and someone would be trying to roll one with half a pay voucher, or packing these pipes that held about an oz...LOL

I quit as soon as I got back to the States because pot was $10/oz (dimebag) and I couldn't afford it!

All this gun talk is making me trigger itchy!! :icon_psyc Well, I guess I am leaving now to go fire off a few rounds with the canon over at double action. :seizure:

I think me and my friend are going to try to get to the pit this saturday. We've never been and wanna pop some proverbial caps.

Had that one, sold it to a friend. That stock is a uncomfortable sob when it it is 2degrees out. Otherwise, nice PolyTech.

What exactly does it say on the left side?
Norinco?
PolyTech?
Clayco?
GSAD?

More like early 80's too
