Scary night.....

Damn that is scary, glad you guys are OK.

Even more scary that they know where you live/work. No doubt they've seen you there before.

I've often wondered, if you don't have a gun and some one is threatening your life with their gun and you run them over with your vehicle, is that treated any different then if you shot them? Is it not still self defense?

Nope, cuz you keep driving and dont stop until you get to the closest quarter car wash.

IMO yes, but it'll cost you a few grand in legal fees to defend it.

Make sure you bring your CSI (NY, Miami, LV) notebook to make sure you get all the evidence off. TV.. making criminals better, and technical jobs more glamourous... glamerous, glam... better looking, than they really are.

The second robbery incident occurred on October 23, 2009 at approximately 10:28am on W. Warren at Second Avenue. There, a 25 year old male WSU student stated he was walking when he was "intentionally bumped" by an unknown black male. The student and the subject momentarily argued when the unknown male threatened to shoot the student. The subject opened his jacket revealing a "brown handle" which the student took to be the handle of a handgun. The subject told the student, "Give me your money". The student surrendered $6.00 in cash. The student did not report the incident until 7:00pm that evening.
I was actually thinking about this last night after someone got robbed in detroit. In this situation I think I would have probably shot him but the cost in legal fees would suck.

Legal fees aren't shit compared to the value of your life...

In Michigan you have a DUTY to retreat, There are exceptions that I am not going to get into. Just remember, you have a duty to retreat=.

I thought Castle Doctrine changed all that? You 125% sure?

Inside the home, the Castle Doctrine changed that....as far as I know. You can only retreat so much outside of the home before you feel that your life is in imminent danger, IMO.

I'd stay as far away from that city as possible.

He showed a lot more restraint than I would have.

I thought where ever you are is your "castle" like a hotel etc. now a car I don't know, now being a woman they can feel that there life is threatened even if the perpetrator doesn't have a weapon..IMO..I told the wife if someone breaks in grab the gun and go to the baby's room, or if you cant make it stay in our room, if they set both feet in the room.... shoot.
and also I read that Granholm passed a law that if you go to court for self defence, by shooting someone and are found innocent, the state of MI will re-compensate you moneys....it was in a NRA magazine a few months ago?
oh yea in my CPL class the officer said there there in No retreat law, so basically you don't have to try to leave the situation? This was a new law passed in January of 2009, as was the castle doctrine was changed to garage, yard etc.

I appreciate everyone's concern- it makes me feel better knowing that there are so many good people on this board.

To address some of the questions and comments, I do have a CPL, and believe it or not, carrying a gun has actually made me think everything through more carefully before acting. I have to say that for the most part, I'm glad I responded the way I did. I would have liked to fuck some people up, but three things went through my head- 1. They were just some stupid kids out drinking and not thinking clearly. I didn't want to have to shoot some 18 year old if I didn't have to (he looked young). 2. I didn't want to get into a shootout with three aggressors- the two in the vehicle could have been armed. My girl would have had no means of escape, other than to duck, so I would have to stick with the vehicle. If homeboy in the back seat had an AK, my chances would not have been not good. 3. We were in a residential neighborhood, so if I were to miss a shot (likely, since I was seated in my truck and under stress), odds were high that I would have been using somone's house as a backstop. While I have absolutely no problem taking a life to defend mine and my loved ones', I couldn't live with hitting someone by mistake as they were watching TV in their living room.

As far as running him over, it was a thought....even more so after I had time to reflect on everything that happened. At that point, I wanted to put as much distance as possible between his boys in the car on my right, and him on my left runing at me as quickly as possible. I actually fucked up by getting too close to them to begin with, but I didn't think that they were actually gonna stop the car and get out. Lesson learned.

Lastly, in response to the "move" suggestions, this is the most fucked up part. While Hazel Park and Ferndale aren't quite Detroit, they are quickly getting there. The area is typically not TOO bad, and I have never had issues. The problem is that the garage is at my Grandmother's house. I don't live there, but I have used her 3.5 car garage as my shop since my early teens. She is most definitely not gonna move (while breathing, anyway), so I'll have to handle whatever comes my way at this point. I won't provoke, but I'll be watching them daily for any signs of retaliation.

Thanks again everyone for all the comments and concerns! Benk, if you want, PM me and I'll shoot you my number. If you or your girl are in that area and ever in need, I'm always around. Actually, that goes for anyone here.

Thats easy. Runem over. Then park it at the movies in Detroit or what not with it unlocked. It will disappear and call and report stolen the next day. Then the death is on them and not you!

Leaving it parked unlock with the keys in Detroit throws more flags for them to not fuck with it...

That's just going to add filing a false report to the situation!
