The unfortuante thing is from what I understand a dog is considered property (like your your car) and thus it does not receive the same treatment as a human, so basically they can kill your dog and there is not much you can do, you might get a little money and when I say a little I mean a little, but I will bet nothing happens to the officers since it was a dog.

...unless it's one of THEIR dogs...then it's treated as 100% human. Attacking a police dog is the legal equivalent of attacking a regular police officer.
This is also correct.

		 Sorry, but I've lived in the country my whole life, someone called the police because a dog was laying on a porch? Screened? I'd think since they shined the light on the dog, it was late? Nothing like gunshots at 2am. :S
