Move to Cadillac?

Hi guys and gals. I guess I am wondering if there is anyone on here to lives in Northern michigan and what they think about. Particularly anyone who made the change coming from the Detroit Metro area. I have lived outside a big city all my life, never been a country girl, but I have a possible job. They haven't made me an offer, but I have a second interview by phone on Monday and they have done the background check.

Here's another issue. I love the job I have now. The job is great. I feel competent and confident. I have a one of a kind supervisor, and my coworkers are great. The agency i work for itself has a very good rep in the community. The problem is I get paid very low. When I initially took this job, I took a pay cut, from what I was making at my first job out of grad school. This new job, I would be receiving a 45% pay increase, and get annual raises. I pretty much can't say no because of the money. I can't afford to buy a house and a lot of things I wanted to do in my life with my current salary. Oh, and there are no annual raises or merit raises at my current job. Your salary is locked in. And the way it works is stupid, like this...say I worked there for five years, then another person who worked five years somewhere else comes in, they are going to make more money than me.

Anyways back on topic. Any advice, words of wisdom, words of encouragement. Thanks guys.

Money talks, how secure is the work place you would be going too? weighs a part. my Aunt, and Uncle moved up to Mesic? love the country life. Good Luck with your choice.

that's beautiful country up there. 45% is quite a bit. i'd buy a snowmobile or two and start packing. worst case, in five years you come back to your old job and make more than the person who replaced you. good luck with your decision.

I spent a very short time in school in Traverse City, and met a bunch of people from Cadillac and Manton. Very beautiful area and very cool people. Good ol' boys :)

It seemed like a nice place to live. Cost of living is low, because jobs are scarce. Your job down here sounds like a dead end for sure. It sounds like you'd be making a mistake not to at least give it a try up north.

I moved from the detroit area to lake city/cadillac area when I was 10. When I turned 19 I ended up moving back down here for school and a job. Where might you potentially be working? I liked living up there, but would be really leery about moving back, because the job market is horrible. Good luck, if you have any questions about anything around there let me know.

I'd move up north in a minute but half the problem is job availability, a good friend lives in Traverse City and works at one of only few machine shops in the area and they have a waiting list just to fill out a application.

Everyone is really helping me feel more comfortable about this. I am a social worker. I would be working for Northern Lakes Community Mental health as a therapist. They are a huge organization and cover Grand Traverse, Leelanau, Wexford, crawford, Roscommon and Missaukee counties. Unless I really fuck up at the job, I have 0 concerns of being laid off due to cuts or anything like. Obviously they do well if they can offer that high of a salary. The problem is going to be employment for my boyfriend... He can't even find work down here.

Then it can't be any harder for him to find work up there. I had a similar job where I was supposed to be training the new hires that were getting in for more than me. I've never regretted leaving that company. As far as moving goes, you'll probably miss the small things more than the big things that are different. But if you bring your boyfriend along, it shouldn't be that hard for you. I only see Detroits crime rate going up even more over the next few years. This would get you away from that concern as well.

Social worker up there you will be busy. My aunt tells me about some of the shit that goes on. LOL. my sixteen year old nephew was up last summer. He went outside an heard the lawn mower next door which is about 800ft, next thing he sees is the wacky old lady next door coming around the corner naked mowing the lawn! He calmly walked back into the house and said "Aunt Lori does your neighbor always mow her lawn nude"? She replied yea, just have pretend ya don't see her.:eek::eek: :mouthshut

If the job is stable I say go for it. My uncle moved from Detroit to Cadillac in 1980, and loves it up there.

Sounds like you have to go for it, regardless on how it turns out. It sounds like the current job is a dead end and doesn't fit in your plan for life.

Pack your bags & run...

I know a lot of folks up north, I have yet to
hear one say they regret ever making the move.

(and yes, most came from SE MI)

I will be the voice of reason having grew up in Northern Michigan. (and only 35 minutes from Cadillac) It sucks, its boring, after awhile all the fucking trees look like.......TREES. The woman are fatter, the jobs are scarcer, and the pay is normally less. Oh, and be ready for EVERYONE to know your business like it or not.

FUCK THAT....City life for me forever!

I love that area of Michigan. Hunted Wexford for years. Go for the bucks and you won't regret it.

If you like the outdoors, then take it. If I could make 1/2 to 2/3 of what I made down here up there, I would be gone in a second. My dad lives in Manistee and I visit him all the time. It is pretty awesome.

Have you ever heard of a motorcycle gang in Manistee called "the gentlemen's club" ?

My roomate was the president's kid. I met some rough folks in Manistee!

My mother-in-law live about 30 min from there. I love going up there. Lifes just slower and everyone doesn't seem to be in a rush. Its a nice get away.

I would love to transfer up there and work.

I live in Cadillac, and yes, like dreamer1q said, it is boring. You pretty much have to drive somewhere else like Traverse City or Grand Rapids for enertainment or good places to shop. However, one thing that I think is excellent about this area is the low crime rate, and the near absence of any violent crime. There is none of this getting robbed in parking lots or getting randomly jumped and beat up. I have lived here for 15 years, I don't lock my car up, and I have only had my radio stolen once. I leave the house all the time and forget to lock the door, never had any issues. Probably not the smartest idea to not lock my stuff up, but it just one thing that shows the difference between up here and down there.
