The London Township Board has been waiting nearly the entire 2012 Milan Dragway season to discuss the dragway's schedule, which is coming to a close.
London Township has a longstanding agreement with the Milan Dragway that requires the dragway to present its yearly schedule in early spring and seek approval.
The 2012 race schedule was not given to the board until late June and, last month, a representative from the Milan Dragway was a no show at the August Township Board meeting.
This month, a representative from dragway called London Township indicating they couldn't make it to September board meeting.
Township Supervisor Barbara Henley said the dragway was notified of the August meeting, so the board could go over the 2012 schedule and discuss events that have been running late and in violation of the local ordinance.
"I really don't know what to do about them. I've asked them three times to attend our meetings," Henley said.
Henley is not pleased with Milan Dragway officials and their latest postponement.
"At least they called. However, I'm beginning to believe they're just not interested in complying with our ordinances," she said.
The board is concerned with the dragway's lack of compliance because of ongoing noise complaints from residents.
Henley said London Township has restricted operating hours through the township noise ordinance. The Milan Dragway requires prior approvable for late-night events.
Deneen Baxter, vice president of the Milan Dragway, said that she missed the August meeting because she was not notified. Henley said she personally made the calls and left messages.
Since the August meeting, Henley said she has gone to the dragway to personally ask Baxter to attend the meeting.
Baxter said she doesn't understand why people are complaining.
"We haven't used half of the dates we requested this year," she said.
Racing sometimes runs late because of weather conditions or large events. Weather-related delays are down this year; however, the Aug. 19 race was loud and continued past 1:40 a.m., Henley said.
"She just doesn't seem to get it. The Milan Dragway is a specialized business. London Township has worked very hard to allow late racing and special events as long as they are pre-approved," Henley said.
Since the London Township Board has not acted on the 2012 schedule, Henley said no late racing has been approved.
Township officials are looking into a fining system, which would allow the township to issue tickets for ordinance violations.
