It's that time - SALMON FISHING IN THE RIVERS

Warm temps, sunny days, and no rain have made things tough so far from everything I am hearing.

Yep. Steelhead don't actively feed until the water temps are in the low-60's. They're very inactive if the water temp exceeds 70F. There's usually a good run in the Clinton River during October and November, conditions permitting of course.

I watched some fishing moving up the platte last week. Just singles though. Nothing in numbers.

They tend to move that way when they aren't spawning. When they begin to spawn, you should see groups of them moving around the river.

i was up at the betsie this past weekend, fairly slow but i did manage a few fish.
we need some cooler weather!

Yup. Exactly what I found out. Need another 2 weeks for it to cool down to bring the fish in. However then you have to deal with all the falling leaves in the river.

Thus weekend I hooked 2 salmon by drifting skein, and both salmon went to logs and go snagged up on the logs making it impossible to land the fish.

I think the dnr are full of shit to be honest they say alewife populations are so low the fish have nothing to eat well two years ago I went on vacation to manistee went to the beach and before I even got out of the car I could smell dead fish so im like wtf is that go onto the beach and alewifes were dead all over the beach!! So could the dnr explain that to me why there were so many if they are supposed to be wiped out??? I think salmon stocking is exspensive so they cut back so they could make more $$$$$ and see how the natural reproduction works out well it hasnt and people are getting pissed off including me.

In almost every instance where a government based operation like the DNR has stopped stocking, the natural population has boomed and its better for the species, and the anglers. Hopefully this will be the case here also.

I'll be out on the Clinton this weekend. Conditions should be optimal. Water temp is about 64 right now, turbidity is down, and the flow rate is up. Looking like it'll be a good one!

Anyone had any luck in SE MI? I was out in Lake Huron yesterday dragging a mess of spoons and bombers for hours with no luck.

I had a car show this weekend so I didn't make it out.
Next weekend I have Disney on Ice with my daughter

Seems if they are running in the rivers, I'm missing them this year

i was up again this past weekend
decent amount of fish in the system, almost everything on the beds spawning

Water is still low on the west side of the state, but the steel head are moving up. Had a great day swinging flies for them yesterday.

It's THAT time again. I'll be on the pere marquette river for the next 3 weekends.
Have a river charter on Oct 8

The numbers have been up in the great lakes, hopefully this downward spiral of salmon population is reversing and they flood the rivers.

They're already in the PM. That water is almost unfishable right now with all the asshole snaggers.

We're at the lowest number of alewives since sampling began. The DNR is continuing to decrease Salmon stocking, and increase Lake Trout stocking as well as other specie. The majority of salmon returning to the rivers is now a naturally reproducing population.

With the DNR making chumming illegal for steelhead, it's great news for those of us who actually fish and not just snag fish off their beds or chum.

How far up the PM river are the beds?
