Apparently, you can't fix stupid in Camp Mustang...

^^^^ Yep. Funny thing happens when you build cars every single year since May of '64...you sell alot of them.

And as Raj stated earlier, it's a great thing that the pony car wars continue.

I love these muscle car wars. The consumer always wins.

In the 80s it was the Mustangs stomping all over the Camaros on the street. Then the 93's came out with the LT1 and they were actually quicker, especially quicker than the 94-98 Mustangs....except maybe the Cobras. Then the LS1 came out and they beat up on the Mustangs pretty badly. Then the Camaro died.

Now both cars are back and they both look and perform great. It's really a good time to be into cars.

How does a new Camaro SS run against a new Mustang GT? I have a Mustang, would be interested in lining up with a Camaro SS if anyone has one.

The 5.0L GT will asswhoop the SS by far. Ford hit a home run with the 5.0, they haul the mail with very little money thrown at them. I think our SS ran in the low 14.xx range stock..:sigh:

That doesn't seem right. The freaking 5th gen v6s were supposed to run close to 14 flat. A properly equipped v6 Mustang will run high 13s.

I'm trying to remember, I thought I drove it at our track rental. It was VERY hot outside and it went 14.1-14.0. After a tune it dropped almost a second though. The automatics suck because the TQ management.

There were some real slow auto times in the beginning. I haven't heard quite so much chatter about it since though. There may have been some issue in the autos that was fixed as well. Stock manual cars were hitting 12's all along i think?

Idk man, there was a pretty Grabber Blue mustang that raced a 4th gen TA a year or so ago. Damn that poor '11 GT couldnt keep up. Sorry Shaun. lol

LOL

A ZL1 is on par with a base C6.

Nick

I was looking at the ring time list on Wikipedia it was between 911 Turbo S and ZR1. I guess it depends how you define "On Par". If you are a myopic Ford fanatic, you only define it in terms of 1/4 mile time. Whatever works for you though.

I own a Lamborghini, it works for me.

Real world, a ZL1 is on par with a base C6. Basically the same trap speeds, handling capabilities, etc. The C6 is $6k less and the C6GS is $2k more than the ZL1 and boasts better handling characteristics. A brick will never be able to compete with a wedge.

The ZL1 is a joke and GM marketing is working their asses off to make some easy money with the car.

Nick

ps. 997.2 Turbo S will annihilate a ZL1 (or just about any car under $300k, stock).

Reality, and facts beg to differ with your post. Here is a list of all the Lambo's that had slower ring times. I am sure they all cost less and go slower in the 1/4 mile, so by your criteria all is right in the world.

7:41.27 Camaro ZL1 (2012) GM test driver Aaron Link October 2011 GM conducted test (10/2011)
7:42 Lamborghini Murciélago LP670-4 SV Horst von Saurma Sport Auto (01/2010?)
7:46 Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera Horst von Saurma Sport Auto (09/2007)[43]
7:47 Lamborghini Murciélago LP640 E-gear Horst von Saurma Sport Auto (01/2007), Sport tires

So what was that about a brick competing with a wedge? Maybe Lamborghini should do what Ferrari has done and buy magnetic shock technology from GM, then all the little wedges could keep up.

So when is the next Motown track rental at 'The Ring'? Keep me posted because I'd like to go generate some numbers for my car that mean absolutely nothing in the real world.

Sorry, but you can market both of these cars any way you want...most drivers can't begin to reach either car's potential (in a straight line or a road course) so it doesn't mean shit.

Move on...jeezus.

I agree about the relevance of the ring numbers but i still think it's cool that gm got the camaro to run it that quickly. I disagree about the average driver not being able to run these in a straight line. The motor trend and car and driver mags shift and drive like pansies. I'm pretty sure anyone in a car club could match their numbers. Meaning anyone reading this could likely stomp a zl1 with a gt500.

I understand the necessity for some sort of open track measurement, but different cars on different days, etc. make a comparison merely a semi-accurate data point. Especially on a track of that size/length.
And I think you give the average owner too much credit...regardless of the car they drive. But that's my opinion. :)

I've seen some pretty shitty driving out of someone that was enough of enthusiast to have been to Bondurant. I watched this guy drive an 03 Cobra to a 14 second pass and consistently get beaten by a Lightning at auto crosses. His excuse was the tires. The Lightning and the Cobra both had the old Goodyear F1's. I would agree that even among car people, the AVERAGE person isn't running what we've seen either car capable of.
