advise for a daily driver?

Don't flame me for this. But for that price, you will NOT find a better (reliability, cost to repair, ease of repairs) choice than a 96-00 Honda Civic.

My 98 sedan 5spd car just ticked 260k miles, and STILL gets 33mpg COMBINED. It's fun - in the way a go kart is fun - not fast by any means but you can throw it around in the corners/s-curves and it will just grip and feels fun.

They're VERY cheap to modify/upgrade if you DO IT RIGHT... Throw a suspension and non-fart can exhaust on it and it doesn't increase the decibel level much, and will ride great and do awesome in autocross events if you wanted too...

yeah your the reason why i mentioned the honda in my post. ive just owned soo many cars in the past and ive always looked the other way at hondas because ive always had faster cars and looked down upon them. now that i need a family car that is reliable they come to mind. my worries are possible high insurance rates since they are usually driven by teenagers and i heard they are higher theft rates too and thieves look for them to steal parts from. anything to look for on these cars? do i want a v6 or 4 banger? accord or civic?

I also have a 2000 Accord LX (auto) w/ 253k on it for $2500 and a older Civic 4 door with a stick that just came in. I'll have to check the price on the Civic.

hey how late are you open til tonight? if at all anyway. wife wants to do some car shopping tonight and would love to stop by.

whats everyones thoughts on the subaru?

I've thought of going with one of the subaru AWD cars because they would be good in snowy times and still get decent mileage, but I've always been concerned with the repair cost on parts and ease of repairs. I am a mechanic by trade, but have very little experience with those cars and it wouldn't be so straight forward to fix. I like keeping with what I know for a daily driver because when it needs something I don't have to spend a bunch of time dicking around with it to figure it out. I wanna be able to diag, get parts, and repair almost anything all in the same day. Otherwise whoever is counting on it to get to work could be screwed.

yeah that makes sense. im starting to like the honda idea more an more. i just think its time for a change to something different and a vehicle that is known for reliability. should i be worried about the insurance and high theft?

Be more worried about your wife telling what to and what not to buy!!!!!

My civic is cheap as fuck to insure. Like 30 a month cheap. When I get on a pc/laptop ill type moreinfo and what to look for.

I have one for you, but its no where like the rice burners your looking at. (or a countour...yuck)
Crown Vic police version.4.6L 3.7 axle/fresh trans with a shift kit. Fat sway bars and good acceleration from the gear make it fun to drive.
Fun as hell to drive (especially on my daily commute across 8 mile....every one clear out of you way and NOBODY pulls in front of you...lol)
You wont be able to keep you foot out of the gas though. Personally I think it could use a supercharger.

Get a C5 Corvette with s 6-speed. 31mpg.

But seriously...with a $3k budget.... you aren't going to find a Subaru that's not in crap condition. I'd look for a grandma owned Cavalier, Civic or even a Neon. The older Neons were pretty bulletproof

I'd put my civic against that boat in an autox / twisties .. far more fun there while getting 30mpg

Sure...would you like to try that head on or would you prefer a side impact? Besides....no body pulls over and slows down for you...lol
Im 6.2 250 I don't fit in little cars well...nor do I like driving little cars.
I prefer a Truck.

I'm the same size and fit just fine :) In fact, I still have room to move the seat back even more!

And crash testing -- ooOoooOooo.. The EK (96-00) Honda Civic was given by NHTSA a 4-star rating. You say that like it's a BAD thing to have a 4-star rating in a car that weighs less than a fart. It does a good job, they're safe cars. And they don't light on fire in rear impacts. :)

Ok test drove a nice 99 civic lx auto and loved it. Plenty of pep which was surprising, though probably due to how light they are, I think around 2500 pounds. Thing is though that now that I am willing to try an auto, for the same price I can get a nice impala with lower miles and a lot of room and safety. The wife likes them even though its basically the same as a grand prix, gotta love the ignorance...people believe anything they hear even though I'm the car guy and told her ours got great mileage like 30+ on hwy. Plus everyone is recommending it here. Another bonus is that I still have parts left from my gtp that I could use if needed (like a whole ac system). So I think that's the plan for now. I still like the civic but it would have to be mint with a manual and 4dr for me to consider it now. The impala should be pretty quick, especially if I decide to supercharge it later!
