2014 - 15 Lions Discussion Thread

While I agree Pettigrew didn't exactly light up the stats board, he does bring intangibles like blocking etc to the game. Let's be honest, this whole thing started because if said the Lions were a QB away from being a legitimate contender. I didn't call for his firing today or to be traded or anything else. I just said if they had a better qb they would be a serious contender. For some reason those were fighting words. The Lions cannot win clutch games and any allusion to the opposite of that is homerism.

Agreed Ryan.

Sure, I missed the mark with putting Pettigrew on that list (even though all we hear from the coaching staff is how great he is). I stand by my point though, and that's the best rebuttal you have than you don't have much of an argument. I rest my case.

Oh come on, if you're gonna criticize Stafford, adding Stone Hands to the list of his "weapons" is a laugher. Pettigrew looked good for about 5 minutes after getting drafted and since then he's been an absolutely drop machine. He's definitely a weapon...to be used for making Stafford look worse.

Suprised no one brought up the backup QB (imo should of been the starter)
Orlovsky spent his first four seasons in the NFL with Detroit. He started seven games in 2008 and completed 143-of-255 passes (56.1 percent) for 1,616 yards with eight touchdowns and eight interceptions.

Someone was drunk, had too much faith, or lost a bet...maybe all three

From Fox... Three Things the Lions Must Address (hint: Stafford not mentioned)

http://www.foxsports.com/nfl/story/...son-golden-tate-address-this-offseason-010415

"While some will point to fourth quarter flags dictating the result, Matthew Stafford's 0-18 record against winning teams on the road continues to hold true. Despite adding talent last offseason on offense like wide receiver Golden Tate and tight end Eric Ebron, the Lions find themselves on the outside looking in. Even a stellar defense couldn't assist in the playoff push."

Nope, no mention of him there.

FWIW, I don't think Stafford is the Lions biggest problem. Special teams and O line sure could use an upgrade this off season.

We have a breakthrough.

I'm a big believer in team culture dictating outcomes in team sports. The Spurs in Basketball or the Patriots or Packers in football are great examples of franchises that continually manage to plug in guys to their system and remain near the top. Yes, they have top talent but they manage to make everyone better. Mike Budenholzer leaves the Spurs staff and the perpetually mediocre Hawks are absolutely mowing people down after he installs the same system in Atlanta.

Schwartz was good to get the Lions out of the land of total disgrace, but the guy was a fuckin idiot. All the bad habits of these Lions players were magnified by his macho dumbass gunslinger tendencies. And he made bad players worse. I'm not saying Jim Caldwell is a great coach; he's certainly not shown that to date. I think trying to draw the offsides and then not going for it was ridiculous after the flag/no flag. But I do think that the roster deserves time to install some culture of winning and accountability. They made the playoffs in year 1, and Stafford definitely cut down on the miscues. If at the end of year 3, they have nothing better to show for it, then I'd look for a QB. Definitely not now. You give up on talent this early, more often than not, you're not hitting the lottery with the replacement and will be doing the same legwork for another 5-6 years with another guy.

I wouldn't look for a QB yet either. Like you said he needs a few more years with Caudwell to see how that works out. That was Mike's hypothetical "well who's better than him" tantrum that led to that. I just gave him a list of QB's that I think could do a better job, which is what he asked for.

His over all yards and TD's are down this season but his completion percentage is up, and he has the wins to show for it. Which to me is more important than him throwing for 5k yards in a season.

But I don't think he has what it takes to win big games. You act like this is his first year under center. He hasn't proven anything, and I'm not going to buy into him until he does. If and win he does, then I'll drink the koolaid.

You'll never drink the koolaid... Or believe in the Lions... They are already way ahead then LOLions or SOLions...

how do you figure? 1 season makes them better than SOL? Your blinders are the worst.

Matthew Stafford named Pro Bowl Offensive MVP ;)

So basically... You vote to put the best players in the league into one game... and he was voted the best of the bunch.

Lol

glendale, ariz. – it took injuries to a few of the players picked in front of him for matthew stafford to make his first pro bowl

Tony Romo started then sat the rest of the game after one series. Players were complaining that the game was taking it easy and it wasn't real football. I wouldn't put this in the category of proving anything other than in a scrimmage Stafford can throw the ball.
