2014 - 15 Lions Discussion Thread

All of this.

I told my wife that I'm gonna have to give her a black eye on general principle if I see one more fucking stupid ad from the NFL with people tearing up not able to talk about domestic abuse. Give me a break. If Roger Goodell thought it would raise the value of his owner's franchises, he'd choke his wife to death on national TV as the halftime show at the Super Bowl.

The onion said it best with their headline:

NFL Announces New Zero-Tolerance Policy On Videotaped Domestic Violence
NEW YORK—Following public outcry over his mishandling of Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice’s aggravated assault of his then-fiancée, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell announced Tuesday that the league has adopted a new zero-tolerance policy toward all videotaped domestic abuse. “We hold our players to the highest standards both as professional athletes and as people, so any violence toward women that is recorded, authenticated, and then publicly distributed will be met with an automatic suspension and fine,” said Goodell, adding that the new, stricter guidelines reflect the league’s hard-line stance against any spousal abuse that is clearly and irrefutably captured on film. “I can assure you that any member of this league who strikes a woman in front of a live camera will face swift and heavy consequences. I also want to stress that this utterly reprehensible behavior is something we will in no way tolerate as long as the footage is completely uninterrupted and the entirety of the assault takes place within frame.” Goodell went on to clarify that in such cases, the NFL will cooperate fully with local authorities as soon as the league can no longer prevent incriminating evidence from being leaked to the media

Because I watch enough NFL football to know that truly great QBs are very few and far between, NFL fans everywhere do the same exact whining about their quarterbacks, and the QB always makes a convenient scapegoat until the next doomed franchise savior shows up.

Saying Stafford has never won a big game isn't saying much considering he's been the quarterback of a number of very bad teams. He had a good season overall and did what they asked. Less sidearm, less picks, won 11 games, was in a controversial playoff game that could have gone either way. At 26 years old, in the first year under a non-chucklehead coaching regime, I'll take it.

This.

I find it somewhere between frustrating and amusing that people cannot seem to understand the difference between worshipping Stafford as a God and being OK with his performance and progress. Apparently there's no in between and because I'm not calling for Stafford's head, it means that I'm some sort of total sackrider with blinders on. I'm realistic. He's a good quarterback, who's improving with the team.

As I've mentioned, the people who want to cut him loose offer no reasonable replacements that would make the team better. Fact is, we are NOT going to get Andrew Luck, Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Ben Roethlisberger, Aaron Rodgers or anybody of that caliber. Yeah, Tony Romo led a game winning drive last night... but he also did his best to give the game away. Those scrambles that led to sacks for 10-15 yard losses??? The Stafford Lynch Mob would have been going insane over those plays. Romo also flat out missed several wide open receivers to the point where the announcers were wondering if there was something wrong with him... And how did Big Ben play this weekend? Anybody see that INT he threw into triple coverage in the end zone on first down? LOL.

36.3 – Stafford's QBR on Sunday. Ouch.

Romo's was 34.7 and Roethlisberger's was 37.8

So, he fell right in the middle of two guys that everybody swears are both much better than him? Are any Steeler fans calling for Ben's job?

Andy Dalton was 20.0 and Lindley was a 6.1

You guys got hosed on Sunday, the PI call that got picked up was pure BS,then "I Smacked my Mama in the mouth" runs out on the field and confronts the ref.

That should have been 15yds even if they pick up the PI flag.

The Lions are in FG position with that penalty and the 10yd punt doesn't happen nor does the Cowgirls short field game winning drive.

You know why you got hosed? because Dallas fans would want Romo run out of town and the coach fired and that team would get blown up.

Your team has a young QB and 1st year with the team coach and the reaction won't be as strong. JMHO

This league sucks more and more every day:(

The Lions defense played well enough to win. The Lions offense on the other hand, did not. They scored a total of 3 points in the second half. Who is the leader of the offense? Stafford. You most certainly can put the blame on him.

I dont get the babying of Stafford by you and Mike. "Oh he played ok, but he didn't lose it for them." Yeah but he didn't win it either. Good QB's step up and win big games. Stafford has never won a big game, ever.

Did you know that Stafford led the league in game winning drives this year? Led the league, my man. Led the league. Now, some silly slappies will say that none of those were big games, but when you get into the playoffs as a wildcard, aren't all of those big games? 5 times this year, it came down the final drive and Matthew Stafford and he delivered. Pretty good. Better than most. Check that, better than anybody else :)

The Stafford talk is funny to me, he is not the reason they lost the game. While I don't feel he's great he's a good QB and still plenty young. He's good enough to win a superbowl with the right pieces around him.(if that could ever happen with the Lions) If Eli and Ben can win them he sure can given the right situation.

You have a great young QB,trust me there isn't anything better out there in FA or the draft.

If your fan base wants to run him out of town please send him to Buffalo we would be glad to have him.

Pool report transcript from referee Pete Morelli with pool reporter Todd Archer:

Archer: Can you talk about the decision to overturn the call and why you overturned the call?
Morelli: The back judge threw his flag for defensive pass interference. We got other information from another official from a different angle that thought the contact was minimal and didn’t warrant pass interference. He thought it was face-guarding.

Archer: Which official?
Morelli: The head linesman.

Archer: What did you see?
Morelli: It’s not my responsibility. I’m a hundred miles away.

Archer: Face-guarding is not a foul?
Morelli: Face-guarding is not a foul. It is a penalty in college but not in professional football.

Archer: What is the process you go through after you announce the call? Should you have waited before you announced the call?
Morelli: Probably, yes. The information came and then the officials got together a little bit later, after it was given to me, the first information. It would have probably been smoother if we got together.

Archer: Do you remember this type of player happening before?
Morelli: No, not particularly.

Archer: So one more time on who the person was that had a better view?
Morelli: The better view was from the head linesman.

So the head linesman was the one who decided to pick up the flag because he felt there was "minimal contact"

And no mention of the missed unsportsmanlike conduct call for running onto the field without a helmet to argue with an official, either.

Oh wow, led the league. That's awesome. Super impressive. Tell me, how many of those were playoff games? Surely with being so awesome they will go deep in the playoffs then, right?

I bet a bunch of those were on the roads against teams like AZ, NE, and GB too right?

How mnay points did they score in the 2nd half against Dallas in the 2nd half then? I bet it was a shit ton.

Calvin Johnson, Golden Tate, Reggie Bush, Brandon Pettigrew, Joique Bell. How many more pieces does he need? All we heard about all season was his weapons. Still cant get the job done.

Reggie Bush has been pretty subpar this season, Pettigrew is awful. He can't catch a cold. His 9 catches this season was really worth $4m/year! Joique Bell is good and hopefully getting better. So, he has two good/great receivers but one has been hurt much of the season. Awesome.

Again, I don't understand why you cannot comprehend the difference by being satisfied with Stafford's performance vs sucking his nuts? It's Super Bowl or the whole team sucks for you guys, LOL

check out transamtom's post. Buffalo fans, along with about 20 other fans bases, would gladly take Stafford.

And...I'll ask one more time, and I'm sure you're going to ignore it one more time.

Please....

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE

Offer up a suggestion for improving the Lions at the QB position. Who's realistically available and going to make this team better next year?

*crickets*

If you had to swap QB's for next season, there are a quite a few of the non "elite" QB's I would take over Stafford, to answer Ryan's question for him.

Kaepernick
Roethlisberger
Romo
Alex Smith
Wilson
Eli Manning

Stafford is very, very average. He's the best QB the Lions have ever had (which isnt saying much) but this team is fraudulent. He can't beat a team with a winning record on the road.

Until he beats good teams on the road, he's good. He's not great.

I already answered the question of who I would rather have, YOU'RE the one ignoring the answer. I would add Cam Newton to that list also now. Why? Because he has shown he can win a playoff game.

So those guys are all free agents or on the trading block? Because that was my question... Not fantasy world QBs. I mean, might as well just add Luck, Brady and Peyton to the list. All guys who aren't going anywhere from their current team...so not really an answer to my question, is it?

PS... We talking about the same Tony Romo with a worse QBR than Stafford this weekend, who's also extremely injury prone, produces more turnovers, etc, etc? You think he looked better than Stafford on Sunday?

Oh Mike. You expect me to be able to answer that question, but you wouldn't be able to answer it either if you're life depended on it. So stop thinking your so smart by asking questions that realistically no one knows the answer too. At this point of the season no one can be traded and free agency isn't even open until early March. So how could anyone even answer your hypothetical question?

None of those guys are fantasy type guys. There is no Brady or Peyton on that list. Now you're just being absolutely ridiculous, it's hard to have a sensible discussion with you.

Dude, come on. I'm not basing my question on the date on the calendar as it relates to NFL trade/FA rules! Stop acting like you can't answer the question because it's past the trade deadline.

The question is simple. Which quarterback, who might REALISTICALLY become available, would make the Lions better?

You know that Manning, Luck, Wilson, Flacco, Roethlisberger, Brees, Newton and Wilson aren't going anywhere. So those aren't realistic.

Beyond that... which QB do you think is so much better than Stafford that this team instantly goes past the Wild Card game?

While I agree Pettigrew didn't exactly light up the stats board, he does bring intangibles like blocking etc to the game. Let's be honest, this whole thing started because if said the Lions were a QB away from being a legitimate contender. I didn't call for his firing today or to be traded or anything else. I just said if they had a better qb they would be a serious contender. For some reason those were fighting words. The Lions cannot win clutch games and any allusion to the opposite of that is homerism.
