This is just like the 3rd gen vs Mustang debates. The Mustang blew the doors off their 3rd gen counterparts and it only took a spindly 302 to do it to their 350s.

Only exception to this was when GM snuck 1500 Buick v6's into the Trans Am in '89.

Actually if you check out auto magizines from the late 80's you will find the 350 powered F bodys were always at least a tenth, MPH, or both faster than the 5.0 stangs they were comparied against.

Do a google search if you dont beleive me..... I hate the misconception that 80s 5.0s were sooo much faster than 3rd gens. My 87' Trans Am GTA w the 350 I had in HS beat all my buddies Foxbody Mustangs.

I remember that. The tuned port 350 cars were pretty rare, though. When GM came out with the tuned port 305 they were about neck and neck with the mustang 5.0. That was a nice change since the f-bodies got their butt kicked for a few years at the start of the 80's. It goes back and forth is all I was saying originally.

Sorry I don't have to read about it because I was there. I graduated in 87 and myself and my friends all ran those cars. They stomped the fuck out of the TPI cars, 5.0 or 5.7 on a regular basis.

But I agree with Geoff it has gone back and forth. The LT1 cars were faster. The LS1 cars were certainly faster.

The Pony Car Wars.................may they continue until we are dead and gone!

THe 5spd TPI cars from 88-90 were the quickest Fbods along with the 350 autos from that same time period. My 5 spd 305 TPI '88 went 14.44 (can't remember the trap - want to say 98) stock back in the day on street tires, and my friends 350 auto went like 14.7 or something. I feel like ALL the stangs were in that lower 14 ballpark, while only some of the 5spd 305 or 350 A4s ran close to that. The auto 305s went 15s mostly from what I remember, and that was the bulk of what was sold. Anyone run their old 5.0 stock on street tires?

Best I ever got out of my TPI with exhaust, ported intake, tune +drags was 13.5 @ 102. I think most bolt on 5.0s outran that, but not sure.

x2!

Also, my 93 Cobra did run 13.80s at Detroit Dragway, BONE STOCK and on the factory 17" gatorbacks. Not many LT1 cars ran that, although Evan Smith drove one to a 13.9x when we were at Englishtown.

I think this is correct. We would run $85 MCreary dirt compound back tires and run 13s with stock 5.0 cars, only "mods" being increased timing, airbox removed, and the flow masters that every car had.

Class of '87 in the house! I think you fell in love with a pony car when you were in your teens. When I was eleven I saw smokey and the bandit about 100 times on HBO and was hooked! (My dad was an early adopter for cable).

I remember in my day, the cars were pretty even, but the Mustangs would come out ahead more often than not because of easy mods. Even though one of the fastest cars around the north side of GR was a guy from Rockford with a 77 TA that had 4.11 gears - he could pull on just about anyone in a short race. I remember it because it had those nasty half size Hurst t-tops that I think were aftermarket. Still, at least his headliner wasn't falling like mine always was! (Carried a can of spray glue at all times!.)

My first car when I was 16 was a 76 Trans Am - 455, 4 speed. It was a dog that had a bad cylinder even, but that was the start of me having owned like 7 of them - with #8 a 5th or 6th gen on the way in a couple years when my truck lease is up in Feb 2014. (Anyone want to take over a Silverado Lease? Seriously!).

Agreed. But those cars were like unicorns just like the GNX. I can count on one hand how many I have seen in person in my life. My Mom had a Formula 350 in 89 and it went 14.70s on a Vericom vc200 with the timing advanced and every Mustang on Telegraph would whoop it's ass!! The Mustangs had the "10 minute tune up" that would drop a second off their 1/4 mile time with the right driver. F-bodys didn't stand a chance until the LT1 came out and then the LS1 sealed the unboosted Mustangs doom!!

What a great time to be in the car scene!! It was the late 60s all over again!!

I graduated in 1990. I first had a 85 Trans am (until my brother totaled it) with a TPI 5.0 and it was a dog. The Mustangs could beat me easily. I then got a 89 formula 350. My dad had headman Headers/K&N filter, Hypertech chip (if you remember those) and a Flowmaster cat back installed. It would beat every 5.0 Mustang. I do have to admit most of the time because the "kids" could not drive a stick. (spin the tires, miss a shift, etc).

I loved that car and look for one on Craigslist once in a while. It was rather nice since it had T-tops. Kinda the "factory light weight" of its time.

Those mid 80's F-bodies looked pretty awesome with that two-tone paint. They had a red and silver and a black and gold that just looked killer.
