U of M is going to have a hard time slowing down MSU's passing game and running game.. Their defense sucks.. Ours stood up to Wisconsin's running game, and they are ranked #13 in the nation for rushing on offense...




I don't think MSUs defense is the greatest by any means, but don't expect them to be as easy as Indiana or Notre Dame

If it was just one player, you should be able to stop him, right? They aren't great at rb right now, but Roundtree, Hemingway, and Stonum are each better than any wr MSU can throw out there. Plus Odoms and Grady, they've got guys that make plays in space.

The only position group that UM was rated in the top 5 of the Big Ten was the OL. Not taking anything away from Robinson or the WR's but Robinson pulls a lot away from coverage.

Because it's harder to get into than MSU

And it's human nature to be drawn to a winning program if you have no affiliation with either team. Think of all the Red Wings fans in markets where hockey is new. Since there was no team there, people that had an interest in hockey always wanted to cheer for a team that had a chance to win year in and year out. Same thing happens in this area with Michigan. Michigan has the highest winning percentage in major college football. So if you were the typical Walmart shopper then you are looking for a bright spot in life since obviously not much has gone right for you so you cheer for the team that gives you the best chance to be happy on Saturday afternoons.

Michigan wasn't hard enough to get into for me. But I've been a fan of their athletics since listening to their b-ball games in the late 80s.

My grandfather played football at U-M
My dad played baseball and golf at U-M
My uncle was an All-American football player at U-M
My cousin played football and won a National Championship at U-M
My brother and sister both went there
I was accepted at U-M right out of highschool and thought I was going there until a disagreement with my parents left me without the financial means (I bought a motorcycle and they said "if you can afford that, you can afford to pay for your own college"), so I went to Oakland. I have recently begun the process of going back to U-M Dearborn.
We've had season tickets since the day I was born.

That's why I am a fan.

Why is it that's always the first thing spartan fans bring up? Walmart Wolverines and blah blah blah. It's fucking stupid. There are plenty of people who cheer for MSU and never went there. Fuck I root for them during March madness. Should I not be allowed to just because I went to school at THE University of Michigan?

I agree...If only students or alumns can cheer for these schools, the stadiums would be half filled and college sports would not be a big as it is.

No doubt. I bet there are TONS of fans that never went to MSU, but still cheer them on but you never hear an MSU fan bitching about that.

This was brought up on a local sports forum too. This was my response:

I grew up a Michigan fan. Fan, short for fanatic....which implies there is no rationale. Beats me, I just remember listening to to Michigan basketball in the late 80s with Glen Rice and the boys, watching Desmond's Heisman campaign, the fab five, ect....Much like I became a Tiger's fan listening to Ernie even though I grew up hundreds of miles away from Detroit. It just happens, before you know it you're a fan. When it came time to choose a school, I wasn't going to base my decision on who had the better athletic program. Why? Because I'm not an athlete, so who cares? Joe Blow at MSU studying to become a veterinarian didn't go there because of Izzo. Joe Blow has zero impact and zero connection with their basketball program..the same amount of impact and connection I have. So why does it matter?

College athletics is a business. It's entertainment. It's fun. 99% of college athletes in major programs in the big 2 sports would have nothing to do with their schools if not for those sports. they have zero in common with their fellow students. They can ball, you can spell. Let them ball, and we'll keep being fans.

Not true, I am a fan of MSU...............when they play Ohio State.

I halfway root for MSU when they are in the tourney, just because Izzo is a helluva coach and the longer that MSU is good maybe it will motivate Michigan to get their basketball program going.

And I guess I am a "walmart wolverine", as I never went to school there (would have loved to tho). I enjoy Ann Arbor much more than Lansing, and my whole family was Michigan fans when I grew up, so thats who I root for. Like mentioned above if only alumni could root most sports for college would be nothing compared to what they are.

You think this area is any different than everywhere else in the nation? I'd wager that we have a higher percentage of fans that went to their respective schools, than say USC, Florida, or Texas. the smaller (and less successful) schools will always have a higher percentage of school attended fans, because who roots for a little brother if they have a choice?

If you are a Michigan football fan, you are stuck with that sucky ass basketball team too!

I think the only thing that bugs others about Michigan fan is the arrogance. While not real pleasant from an Alumnist, it's worse coming from Joe Schmo (aka, the Walmart Wolverine). All it does is breed contempt.
