2000 and up if possible. They came with the heavy duty trans. Other than that, aside from a few minor interior difference the motors are the same. The best place to look is on craigslist. Dont get one with mods because 9 times out of 10 theyre beat to hell and will get trans problems real fast.

2000 was the best year IMO. 2000 still had digital climate control. My '00 was nice, and was still running strong after 140k (other than leaking coolant into the block, common 3800 problem).

Stay well away from 97's,
- 98s didn't have much of a change. Still had the rear antenna. Different intake from 97, and many various other differences.
- 99s again the same, just moved over to the rear window antenna (IIRC), minor engine changes.
- 2000 was the last year of the digital climate control
- 01 went to the manual climate control, and got the fatter steering wheel.
- 02, last year of the Coupe
- 03 last year.

04s are decent, but again a first model year car with it's own quirks.
05s were better, and then from there on out, you're on your own.

I have a 97 I just bought, I'm happy with it so far. My buddy has an 01. They are great cars, last a long time and watch for any trans slippage. $800 or so for a new one. If you're looking for something nice you'll pay $4500+ Most people just trash them :shake:

I had a '98 without an antenna. ;) Had 190,000 miles on it and it still ran like a champion. Have a '01 Turbo GTP right now. If you need Grand Prix assistance, I am your resident expert. Feel free to PM me. :)

they made the GTP series 3 supercharged 2004-2005 Had the most power stock rated at 260hp also with the GTP COMP G package you get tapshift, used to have one it was bad ass simple pully change and I could easily pull on GTO's. The only problem I had was at 40,000 miles just before I turned it in (leased) under full acceleration the trans would let the engine hit the rev limiter and bounce before it would shift. Fast as hell for a big car tho I would look for an 04-05 because the new body style had better suspension and more power

wow thanks everyone for the response i defiantly want a stock one and now i know be on the lookout for a 2000 and check the trans fluid to see how hard its been driven if anyone can find a 2000 gtp for a good price let me kno

I had a 2000 daytona 500 pace car......The only bitch I had about the car was the transmission had to be replaced twice.....but other than that, the only other bitch I had was the premium gas....

TSHAFT

I had a 98 GTP 2door with no mods in 2001. It had 47,000 miles on it and it ran 14.25@99MPH at Lapeer! I beat a couple 5.0 fox bodies on the street with that thing too!!! I loved that car.

I had no issues with my trans because I did a trans fluid change at 47K when I got it. I sold it to a friend in 2003 with 52K (he had the fluid changed at 85K just for the hell of it) and he drove it til 108K....when his girlfriend wrecked. I fixed it, he sold it to a friend who is still driving it with about 115K and it's still fine.

They do have transmission problems nowadays because they're old. 97-98-99 =10 years old. 01-03 not much newer, so they are up there in mileage and have had 5 or more owners. Plus, if they never changed fluid....that's another reason.

Few other points... In 2001 GM did away with the performance shift button. You can re-add it, but it requires a little wiring and a re-programmed PCM. Pretty much any GTP will be prone to trans problems if it was abused.

I have a 99 Regal GS for sale, 250k miles, prety good shape. At 230k miles I replaced the Engine, Transmission, wiring, pcm, suspension, subframes, fuel tank / pump, brakes, etc... with parts from a rolled over 2003 GTP with 7k miles. Let me know if your interested.
