So one of the laptops took a shit. Monitor died. Anyways, it has been replaced with another laptop. BUT, I am going to build another desktop and was curious if there is any reason why my windows 7 key from that Toshiba laptop wouldn't work on another machine that will have Windows 7 installed on it?

Yes. Those licenses are generally pretty restricted in how often they can be used and it's possible that they are limited to being used ONLY on the Toshiba device.

Even the key they list on the bottom of the laptop?? I would have figured since I own the machine I also own the rights to the operating system key?

It's probably an OEM version, thus it will only work on a Toshiba.

The key is valid, the install disc isnt. You'll need to find a copy of that exact install not restricted by Toshiba's hardware.

I have a legit disc from my other desktop but obviously the key isnt good. I got an awesome deal on it a couple years ago for 100 bucks direct from microsoft as a student.

the key on the case isn't used. it's OEM, OEM computers are activiated via SLP (system locked preinstalation) you can use that key that's on the sticker on your computer 5 years from now and it will be good as gold.
OEM and retail Win7 CD's are locked to a channel and install format (version) by the ei.cfg file, delete that file you'll have a Win7 DVD hat will instal any version and take any corresponding key.
ie if you have a Win7 Pro key install Win7 pro use the Win7 Pro OEM key activate and your good to go.
