Who drives an hour one way to work?

I drive 35-40 min one way to work now. I actually like it. It give me time to wind down/gear up for the day. I also listen to alot of seminars and college courses on audio. I call it "automotive university" :D

27 miles for me, Westland to Rochester Hills. Takes about 50 minutes. I hate every second of it. I would gladly take a pay cut to be less than 10 miles from work and have those hours back.

Royal Oak to Romulus - ~38 miles each way - 45 minutes in the morning, 70 minutes home. I hate every minute of it, especially when in stop & go traffic on the way home. I could work out 90 mins every day instead of sitting on my ass in the car playing bumper cars with dumb drivers if work was only 4 miles away.

Saline isn't in Washtenaw is it? I know when we were house shopping, it was well worth our time to not buy in washtenaw. Add in Ann Arbor city tax and it's outrageous.

I liked the 20/30 minute drive at my last job. Gives you time to wake up/wind down. I live 15min from work now. Its nice but i would like to get out of the apartment game. Working 2nd shift a 50mi commute wouldn't be bad. Traffics not horrible in the afternoon between the day shift lunch and commute home. Going home at midnights nice too. practically no one on the roads other than drunks and cops. Other than that im starting to HATE second shift. You day shift guys think losing an hour or two on the way home is bad. Try losing your hole afternoon/night.

It is.

Interesting thread topic; personally I've done the long commute before and can't stand it (for many of the reasons already mentioned). I much prefer a short commute to work. Pros/cons for both sides, YMMV...

OP - G'luck with your decision !

I have a 27 mile commute. I can start/stop when I want. I work 4 days a week to save on fuel. Most days I leave at 6:30 and get home around 6:00. Sometimes 7:00. Sometimes 8:00. Sometimes 9:00.

If I can avoid fo'wheeler rush hour (7:20-8:30/4:30-5:20) and douchebag 18-wheeler traffic (2:00-4:45) then the drive is fine rain/snow/shine. However oldman/texting woman rush hour sucks because they all want to go 65mph-75mph-65mph in a 1 mile stretch of road effectively bottling up traffic to the point if you're a mile back you're lucky to hit 55mph. During 18wheeler rush hour all the fleet/rental drivers think that they will get to their destination that much faster if they pass another tractor that is going 60mph with their 61mph. Essentially, it takes them 1.5-3 miles to pass each other. These things can turn a relaxing 25 minute commute into an extremely irritating 35 minute commute.

I miss my 4 mile commutes of yesteryear. Problem is I can't replace my income anywhere I'd like to live because EVERYONE would like to live near where they work which drives up the price of real estate near the well-paying jobs.

I went from 15 minutes each way to 40 each way. I'm driving 27 miles each way between dearborn heights and auburn hills. I don't mind the drive but I would gladly take a job that would cut it down just to save the time. It makes it easier for me to deal with the drive since I've got a cool boss and a good work environment.

I did it for 9 yrs, sometimes they were well over a 1 hr drive (Union Mason)
My wife drives 69 miles/1 hr and has done it for the last 18 yrs

1 hour and 15 minutes one way but this is going toward washington DC in the morning and traffic on I95 in the mornings is an absolute mess.
It's worth it.

Carleton to Dearborn. 25 miles / 30 minutes. All freeway. No real issues with the time. I know people who's time is the same, but they're only going 10 miles. I really like living in a more rural environment. Bigger lots, like-minded neighbors, relaxed regulations, peace and quiet. I could do this all day. Chances are, you'll have a longer commute to go with that. Yes, when I built out here fuel cost wasn't as much of an issue!! I figure I'm trading higher fuel cost for lower taxes. OH! And sanity!!

Flint to troy. 50 miles door to door. The drive in is OK, I can make it to work in 45 mins. The drive home sucks balls! If I carried a gun I would run out of ammo on a daily basis.

I'm gonna go stay a week out near Clinton and drive to work every day at different times and see how it goes.

Chelsea to Canton and back every day for 18 years. 40 miles, best part of an hour in clean traffic, which is about 70% of the time. Retired now. Certainly don’t miss the drive but would do it again. For me it’s a quality of life thing.

Cons: Winter driving
Traffic jams and road construction
Everybody else on the road
When you’re late you get to think about it for an hour.

Pros: Really like where I live.

My taxes are outrageous in Plymouth Township/Wayne County. I've been looking for a new place in Washtenaw County. Depending on what I find my taxes will go down AND I won't be in Wayne County. I absolutely HATE Wayne County, nothing but a bunch of crooks!

I work exactly 4.3 miles from my driveway, to my parking spot at work. I will be moving approx. 30-35min away from my work to a MUCH more rural area as well in the next year or so. I can't stand most people and absolutely hate having neighbors. I know for a fact it will greatly improve my life, attitude, and overall happiness to live where I want. My work is near 23 mile road and Romeo Plank, and I'll be moving right around Dryden road and Van Dyke area'ish, so traffic won't ever really be bad for me even with the longer drive since most people drive south in the afternoon. I say go for it and don't look back! Sorry for the rambling!!

This is me to a "T" other than I'm looking at moving a little more 30-35min away.

Ya, years ago I drove roughly 50 minutes to an hour each way for about 3 years. It was GREAT money at the time though, so I was absolutely willing to do it. I had a little 5 speed neon that got in the mid 30's for mpg, so it still only cost me $30 a week for gas. I usually don't mind a little drive, it gives me time alone to gather my thoughts and just relax and listen to music. Good luck on your decision.
