Want to ditch cable TV

So, I know some of you got rid of your cable TV subscriptions and watch your shows online, via smart TV, game system or aftermarket media streaming box. I want to do the same thing. I'm sick and tired of paying the cable bill every month. My only concern is that I DVR a lot of shows. I'm thinking that there would be a few of them that I couldnt find. We dont watch anything that's not mainstream, but I'm wondering if I'm going to regret ditching the cable provider.

Some of the shows we watch here are: Game of Thrones (HBO), Lots of shit on Discovery Channel, Hardcore Pawn (TruTV), River Monsters, Falling Skys, Revolution, The Walking Dead, Cmyz28 Likes Giving Rusty Trombones, Tanked (Animal Planet), Franklin and Bash, etc...

Any comments, advice or thoughts would be much appreciated on ditching cable.

My setup isnt for the faint of heart. If you wanna hear about it, Ill post it up

Well...I know your on the upper end of audio/video stuff, so I'm sure you have a pretty expensive/crazy setup, but I'd still like to hear about it.

Its not really expensive, Im a pretty frugal kinda guy when it comes to most of this stuff . There are a few ways you can go about it. First off, it depends on what shows you watch and if the stations are local or cable. Do you usually DVR something and watch it, or do you plop your ass in front of the TV at 8PM every night when all the good shit starts coming on? The easiest way to do it would be just to grab a Netflix or Hulu+ account, but in that event, youll still need front ends (media players) to play it on your TV. Apple TVs come with Netflix support out of the box, and Im pretty sure it does Hulu too. Im not positive on how many concurrent connections Hulu will let you have, but Netflix will give you 4 of them for $12 per month. The main issue with said services, when is the show available to watch? You may be days or weeks off from watching something airing tonight. Its easy to set up and simple to use, the main drawback being about content availability. For the general population, this is the route I recommend. Nearly anybody can do it.

...and now, my way. I have a Usenet account, and get unlimited bandwidth for $8 per month. That $8 gets me every TV show and movie Im looking for. I have the fully automatic Usenet reader, Sabnzbd handling all of the RSS feeds received from Sickbeard, the self proclaimed internet DVR. Sickbeard searches for all of my TV shows and Sabnzbd retrieves them, renames them, and categorizes them by title and season. Im also running Couchpotato, which is essentially like Sickbeard but for movies. I type in what I want in Couchpotato, and it goes out and finds it. All of this is set up at my house, with the front ends being little Android media players that have been modified to run XBMC. I usually have my shows within an hour or 2 of it airing, in 720p mkv files. Sometimes, Ill backlog a season, and set it to grab Web-DLs, which are usually iTunes rips and of top notch quality. Way better quality than any service provider. To my knowledge, no cable service providers offer a 1080p signal. The advantages here are quality and how quickly you receive a show. The big gotcha, you need to set some shit up. I run all of that stuff on my home server, which is nothing but a pile of parts from off-lease servers of days gone by. Any old desktop computer can be used as a media server, all it has to do is provide the services mentioned above as well as store and share the files. Those services need to be set up, which isnt too bad, depending on if youre that kind of person. The other part is the media players, there isnt any off the shelf stuff that offers the XBMC experience. It really blows away any interface you can get with any consumer product. There are many small Android media players out there, such as the CuBox, XIOS DS, Ouya, and a host of others. 2nd generation Apple TVs also make fine candidates, but everything needs to be set up. The beauty of it is once its all set up, its fairly easy to use. Sickbeard and Sabnzbd are pretty much set it and forget it type programs, the only required interaction being searching for new TV series or movies. The positives here; faster content delivery, user defined quality, cheaper monthly service. The negatives; higher up front cost, requires some technical know how. Your average computer geek should have no trouble setting up that sort of thing. If thats not you, proceed to option 1

Cancel cable

Hangout at Amurican Jerrry n loans... :)

Can't wait to see you on there pawning artifacts!!! "I know him! He's in my 80's street gang!!" "I wanted that bar mirror, damnit!!" "not the boombox, nooooo!!"

We went to WOW. $80-90 for internet, 3 TV boxes and HD "normal" TV channels, nothing premium. The DVR can record 2 shows at once and store about 20-30 hours of shows.. Comcast was creeping toward $200 after 10+ years of service.. Rediculous.

I have been in my current home 2 years with no cable. And this was after having comcast DVR and all that. I couldn't be happier. We have a netflix acct we share between a few of us, and same with a Hulu+ acct. So I have WOW internet that is like $35 a month with taxes, and then we split the netflix and Hulu and that comes to $5 a month between the two. So for $40 I have most of the series I want to watch. I don't care about being "current" on shows tho.

Damn Tin. You have the setup I want. Im so used to my DVR, I dont want to give that up. No one in my house watches anything on time. Also, none of us watch sports or news. We also rent movies from family video, so movie channels are a moot point. Im not current on any type of software for this stuff. I can catch on pretty quick when it comes to tech stuff though. Im going to look into what youve got going and try to put something together. You wouldnt by chance be in the canton area any time soon, would you? Id love to pick your brain about this stuff. LOL.

Denny..your a funny guy. Damn right, were in a 80s street gang. All bad ass looking n' such. Fuckin awesome.

Silver95, so...your happy? I dont like to admit it, but im a tv junkie. I love my shows. I never need to watch them same day as they air, but I gotta watch them. Also, what speed internet do you get for 35 bucks a month?

When we moved, I decided I was going to leave cable behind. I have been using Netflix now for a month, and really couldn't be happier. It's $8 a month, and you can access it from as many places as you'd like with no extra fee. You can have one person watching a movie in one room, someone else watching a show on the computer, and another person watching on an ipad. You can also bring the service with you, and watch movies/shows on the road (which will be nice if we go somewhere on vacation). There is a decent selection of movies and TV shows...I spent 2 weeks straight watching the entire Lost series. They also have programming for kids (sponge bob, finneas and ferb, etc). In the future, we'll probably also get Hulu+, just because I'm sure we'll run out of stuff we want to watch on Netflix, and Hulu lets you still watch current shows (the shows they support are uploaded the day after they air on TV). You don't get sports that way, which will be a big bummer when NFL starts up again, but saving over $100 a month really more than makes up for missing a few games.

I access it now through my PS3 in our game room and through an AppleTV unit in the living room.

I really dont understand how cable companies price their products. When I was shopping service providers, if you didnt get a bundle, you were getting screwed. Most of us under 40 dont need a phone line, and some of us dont even need TV service. Why does an internet-only package cost as much as a bundle? Makes one wonder if you can call em up and negotiate a price for internet service only. As it stands, Im paying $48 per month for 18Mb Uverse. While its not nearly as fast as WOW or Comcast, its cheap enough. Ive had their service for almost 4 years and havent had a price change.

When we had cable we only watched like 5 channels, so whats the point of paying for 90? Even the shows we would DVR most would be on FOX. With Hulu+ you can watch them the next day, with some commercials, but nothing horrible. Netflix also has all the seasons of TOPGEAR UK!!! And with a smartphone I watch netflix during lunch since we take staggered lunches and it can be boring. So I put in my headphones and watch a show.
The $35 is their 2nd lowest speed, but never have problems with speed. I have a Vizio Smart tv, 2 computers, 2 smartphone running off the system all at once and no lag that I notice.

Its nice to know Hulu gets things fast these days. How is Netflix in that department? I havent used either in about 3 or 4 years. As long as they have them the same week, I might have to switch. I typically watch Discovery, Hitler, Hitler 2, Comedy Central, and Adult Swim.

I'm seriously considering dropping cable, and using hulu plus and netflix, but don't want to lose the red wings games on fox sports Detroit

I've got an Apple TV. It's cool, but if I dropped Direct my bar tabs would skyrocket from watching sports.

i never knew any of this was possible lol i feel like a 34 yr old dinosaur lol, I got to have my sports though...hmmm

I have direct tv and love it but it would be nice to not have the 100 dollar bill

I use an Apple TV and Netflix. I also stream a lot of shows from my iPhone or MBP through the Airplay. Any show or movie I want I just download, hit play, and stream to the TV. I would love a setup like Tin's but I wouldn't know where to start lol

If you have a first or 2nd gen Apple TV, half the battle has been won ;)

Tin cool setup. I am sure most guys on here have no idea what usenet is. What is a good usenet service now? I had one a while back but I just gave up on the whole idea. Torrents are easier to just jump on and grab. I have a few WDTV's that I use for movies on a network drive. We have brighthouse in Farmington hills. They rape me for $240 a month. The service is only $135 and the rest is 2 dvrs and 6 boxes. I would so like to just dump them but I think my family would kill me.
