Want to ditch cable TV

Im using Usenet Server, got it on a special a year ago, $8 per month for life. Usenet is pretty fast, maxes out my connection every time. My favorite feature is the SSL, which bittorrent doesnt use. Usenet right now is pretty volatile, with some sites closing as fast as they open, but Ive found a few reliable ones as of late. My current favorites are oznzb and nzbzombie. Both of them provide API keys that interface with Sickbeard, Sabnzbd, and Couchpotato.

Im having a hard time following...but I want it. I heard hulu does not have up to date shows for Discovery Channel. I have like 5 shows I record on my dvr from discovery. The wife likes game of thrones on hbo. Also, tin, is the setup you have somewhat user friendly? By that, I mean the software used to search and record and play shows.

The software used to search is fairly easy to use, getting it set up is the more difficult part. The hardest part of it all is setting them for post processing, IE cleaning up filenames, renaming files, categorizing, and implementing the API keys. Not really as much hard as it is tedious. Once its all set up, its mostly smooth sailing. There are plenty of tutorials out there on how to set it all up.

CouchPotato: https://couchpota.to/forum/Thread-HOWTO-Install-CouchPotatoServer-v2-on-Windows

I compiled all of mine from source code, but those tutorials above will be able to get any Windows user rolling. These are all written in Python, so they are cross platform. Windows, OSX, and Linux friendly ;)

Tin cool setup. I am sure most guys on here have no idea what usenet is. What is a good usenet service now? I had one a while back but I just gave up on the whole idea. Torrents are easier to just jump on and grab. I have a few WDTV's that I use for movies on a network drive. We have brighthouse in Farmington hills. They rape me for $240 a month. The service is only $135 and the rest is 2 dvrs and 6 boxes. I would so like to just dump them but I think my family would kill me.

Right, no options in the FH! What the freak???

i think i have a 2nd gen, the little black box one.

If its indeed a 2nd gen, you need to jailbreak it and install XBMC. Its pretty easy, but youll do most of it from a SSH terminal. If youre on OSX, you can SSH right from the command line. If youre on Windows, youll need a piece of software called PuTTY.

and if youre on Windows, youll need this: http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/download.html

OSX and Linux users can omit PuTTY, we have SSH out of the box ;)

For those of you concerned with sports, if you have an Xbox, you get the ESPN app for free and can generally watch whatever you're looking for. Though I can't speak to all sports. I watch Michigan Football and Basketball on it without a problem. I have DirectTV and pay 75 a month for their mid level package (200 channels?) with Showtime and HBO. I got it that way when I tried to cancel. My contract is up again in August. I'll leave them if I can't get a good enough deal again. I don't watch TV live other than sports. I watch Revolution, Hell on Wheels, Falling Skies, Body of Proof and that's about it. My wife on the other hand records pretty much anything that comes on TV. I would love to save the 70 a month, but she's not bought into the thought of just having Hulu, Amazon Prime, and Netflix.

i have a macbook pro so it sounds like that makes it easier. i'll start there and se where i get lol
thanks!

We joke that that if you have PuTTY on your computer, you're a Linux Admin.

I am hostage to Dimhouse in Farm Hills too. We killed the cable after 6 months of crap service. I can only tolerate being asked to reset the cable box every f***king time I called, even after I did it several times before I called. Signal would drop all the time, then one day the SOUND quit. I thought it was my TV, but DVD worked fine. I finally had it and told them to get their box. We went to just broadband and run Netflix. The TV runs off bunny ears, and I get 12-14 channels. The only shows I like to watch are MadMen(I love the period correctness of the whole show), and I'm on SOA withdrawls, and mourn the end of Breaking Bad. I find Madmen out on the web the next day (don't watch it on Sunday nights anyway). Done.
I don't watch Ice Road truckers (spoiler - its cold and slippery to drive a truck on)
I don't watch Deadliest catch (spoiler-its a cold dangerous shitty job)
Watching Duck Dynasty or hardcore awn makes feel stupider by the minute, I was afraid I was on a track where my brain would forget involuntary motor functions and I'd stop breathing.
I've never been big on sports, but I can see how those of you that enjoy sports would miss out on a lot if you didn't have cable.

I also let all my magazine subscriptions lapse, I felt wasteful using all that paper. I have held off getting web only subscriptions to see if I missed not having my car mags, but I have not yet.

Overall, I spend a lot less a month, and I get more done in the shop.

When I deployed, my wife dropped the cable (Time Warner) and just has basic and medium speed internet. "We" are a lot happier now. She can still use the net and netflix and I am not paying 120/month for shit tv.

Anything on cable is also on the internet. I watch everything I would normally watch < 24 hours after airing via sidereel. I don't watch sports though, so that could be a deal breaker for some.

Any progress?

when i get to the end of the jailbreak, the error message pops meaning it's done (according to http://www.evasionjailbreak.com/jailbreak-6.1-ios-5.2-apple-tv-2-untethered-using-seas0npass/) so i unhook it from the computer and plug in the HDMI but the ATV light is just flashing really quickly and the screen stays black.

the error i got said something about the wrong firmware i think, i don't think it was the 1602 error i was supposed to get. it popped up and went away before i could read it all.

Yeah I love On Demand and I watch a LOT of sports so I couldn't do away with my Comcast I don't think... I would cry.
