Upon tear down and inspection of my first performance engine:

I'm supposed to go tomorrow and take my whole motor to this hack machinist to look at and get his opinion. I just acted stupid on the phone like I didnt know what was wrong. We'll see if he can admit his faults.

Oh and upon close inspection of the middle 3 main caps I can't see any wear marks between the block and caps if the caps were to be moving.

So in conclusion I will find out tomorrow if I will have my truck for the summer or not!

Joe, nothing you've shown or said so far indicates that he has any faults.
Here's some advice, don't call him a hack.:icon_mrgr
It's entirely possible that the crank is in the shape it's in due to you pounding
on it for a year. If he's going to give you a replacement crank, I'd take it and
smile and thank him and move along.
Mostly just stay calm and let him explain himself without jumping to conclusions.

well

well not sure on yur budget but just bring it down to livernois we aren't to busy talk to mike schropp guy is awesome i gaurantee we can make the best out of it but like i said before if yur ganna do it do it all and get it done right this way theirs no problems aren't you the guy in the orange s-10 or no? if so remember the blue sc camaro from port huron well it me be glad to help in any way i can and like i said that thing needs some heads so if yur interested in any head work let me know

Well I went to the machinist. Here's what he told me, LOL: Apparently I put all 8 of the 2nd rings on up side down, and the rings being upside down put material through the motor and caused the main bearing (copper) wear I saw. and I put the spring between the oil pump and the rear main cap because it physically couldnt get through the pickup screen. So I jsut stood there and acted stupid didnt say much to him. Then he pointed this out to me, he "knicked" the throws with the grinding stone apparently:

Oh and BTW no free crank or anything.

I think his "knicking" caused a balance issue plus the snout being out of round causing and oil leak is what cause the bearing damage and oil leaking.

He offered me another 10/10 cut crank with a gasket set, bearings, rings, and oil pump for $235 or so. I'm tempted to take it and then have the crank inspected by another machinist or just forget about the whole thing and save the $$$ for a better motor in the future.

If you puit new rings in it you should hone the cylnders.

I dont understand how having the rings backwards would make anything get inside the engine to cause the bearing to look like that. Did you have him check the main bearing bores?

that "knicking" problem shouldnt affect the balance at all. Think about it people change pistons all the time with differnt weight ones and almost never have a problem. With the metal being taken off the counter wieght thats so close to the centerline i dont see how that it would hurt it. does look pretty sloppy though i would have a fit if were a nice 4340 crank.

Sound like you dont like the machine shop just find another one!

You can get those parts just about anywhere for $235

Now is the snout bent or out of round. Being out of round shouldnt really be that big of a problem the balancer slide over it and thats what the seal rindes on. Its a good possiblity that the balancer could be bad wich happends way more often than a bent snout or crank. Is this the orginal balancer?

Get a trading times. You can find a reground steel 350 crank for $150-$200.
Hell, I've bought fresh .010/.010 BBC cranks for that.
Just take a micrometer set so you can check the journals before you buy.
I can hook you up if you need to borrow some. I also agree that the "nicks"
or touches on the c.weights are no issue as long as the journal width and fillets were right. Just get another crank, set in the block on new bearings in
the two end mains and we can check runout easily. Make sure the snout and crank keyway are in good shape so you don't have to deal with the same shit
again.

Edit: Oh yeah, I would have been pretty surprised if the guy would have given up
a replacement after all this time. Were the rings really installed upside down or is
that his b.s.?

I was just on EBAY and there's a guy called Dirttrackthunder selling SCAT 350 cranks
for $150 and $30 shipping. I bought stuff from this guy, he's legit. These are new
cast steel cranks.

Oh yeah they're upside down. Dot down on all 8. I didnt expect him to give me anything, i just wanted his opinion. I know his shitty cores are what caused my oil leak, but I cant complain because it took me to long to figure it out.

Oh yeah also because the old crank was .020 offset ground, apparently, he says the cast "replacement" style pistons are .020 shorter. This guy also told me when I put it together these same pistons would give me "9.5-1 compression." Basically I'm done dealing with this guy except to get heads flattened at 10PM at night when something is going together last minute.

Thanks for the input, like I said I will need to wait to be able to afford to do anything.

Thats true that most stock repalcement pistons are .020 shorter but ive never herd of offset grinding the crank to correct it. The right way is to deck the block. Im not sure but offset grinding the crank like that could casue it to be out of balance. If they were flat tops at near stock deck hieght with a gasket around .040" and a 64cc head it could be real close to 9.5:1 probally more like 9.3:1.

Sounds like a fly by night operation hes got there to me based on what your saying.

1 bringing me saying i can keep up with fadis car from a roll in another thread has nothing to do with this thread

2 i never said id bust his ass

Yup its pretty damn fly by night, w/e i learned my lesson.
