Three vehicles were forfeited last week as part of a crackdown on illegal street racing and six more forfeiture hearings are scheduled for Thursday, according to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office.
Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon said drag racing is dangerous and won’t be tolerated in Detroit.
“Citizens should not have to put up with the loud carousing, violence and dangerous driving plaguing their neighborhoods,” Napoleon said in a news release.
“The people who do this typically come from outside the community and some from outside of the state. We’re not going to have them terrorizing citizens with this chaos.”
Paula Bridges, press director for the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, said the office has been working for about a year to shut down illegal street races. Investigations often involve lengthy undercover surveillance, she said. Detroit police, the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office and the Western Wayne Crime Response Team are also part of the effort.
Bridges said some street races involve narcotics and other illegal activities.
She said five of the six forfeiture cases scheduled for Thursday before Wayne County Circuit Judge Virgil Smith involve summer racing at Fort Street and Woodmere in Detroit. The sixth case is related to races in July near Warren and Livernois in Detroit.
