Under coat or park it?

I recently picked up a 2000 half ton ram sport. this things clean as hell. I can't decide if i want to either pay to have it under coated, buy a bunch of under coating from the parts store or just park it for the winter. I realize its just a half ton ram but it seems like this things been taken care of very well in the past.

My chevy's falling apart. i think the motors on its last leg and i don't trust it for ice fishing and snow mobile trips this winter. I DO feel confident that it will get me to work and back all winter.

I'm torn on what to do. I dont' feel i have much time left before the salt trucks hit the road. Everyone tells me these dodges disintegrate once they see salt.

Any advise/opinions?

I don't have an answer for you, but that is definitely a nice Ram. What about driving it on the dry days and taking it to a coin wash to spray the under carriage a few times per week?

Undercoat the shit out of it. Maybe take a trip over to Canada if they still use that oil based undercoating. If I ever buy a DD (lease my DD's) I would cover that thing with undercoating EVERYWHERE!

Have it done. by the time you rattle can it, and clean up and all the trouble of doing it on the ground it's not worth it. UNdercoating aint cheap anymore at teh parts stores.

oil coating it the way to go, make sure the get the doors, thats the most common spot i see rust out on those trucks

Who does undercoating these days? I google'ed Ziebart and it appears the one here in waterford is gone. What companys do it?

On the plus side there's a car wash right around the corner from my apartment. I figured that could work well if i decided to park it and bring it out on the dry sunny days.

My dad has his Astro Van oil coated on the bottom in 1996, it was probably done before too. It's not as messy as one would think, expect to get dirty if you work on the car. The bottom looks pretty rust free to this day. Seems like a good investment.

You want to use an undercoating that doesn't dry out and crack. When I bought my truck over 10 years ago, I researched all the options. The best that I could find was the Texaco Undercoating. I had it done in Dearborn on the corner of Michigan Ave and Outer Drive. I don't remember the name of the place. I googled Texaco Undercoating and Guaranteed Rust Proofing comes up. The location looks right. You can check to see if they still carry it.

The stuff still hasn't dried and cracked on my truck. I will warn you it is messy. The first summer you will have it oozing out of the door drain holes.

car wash at michigan and outer drive in dearborn used to do texaco undercoating (aka) we called it getting greased
dont know if they still do my dad had my moms car done there in the 70's we offed when it was 8 years old and it still wasnt rusted
and that was saying somthing for a 73 plymouth back then

The doors are the hardest thing to find clean but the boxes pop around the wheel wells and the front fenders usually go underneath where the inner structuring and battery tray stuff is.

I'd have Ziebart undercoat the entire underside and do something with the doors too.

My understanding is that Ziebart provides a warranty against rust if you use their undercoating. However you have periodically go back to have them "maintain" it.

Have to go back yearly IIRC

I called Ziebart after I heard a commercial on WRIF... I think they are around Hall and Van Dyke (?) and for $400 they will wash the under body, under coat it, under coat the inside of the doors, and inside the engine compartment.
They said it takes about 6 hours to do.
I'm going to call the other places mentioned in this thread to get some more prices.
