The de-man-ification of speakers

Looks like a nice receiver to me. The connectivity is pretty damn cool, looks like it does everything but blow you :lol:
 
YLWFVR, sorry to break the bad news, but that receiver is junk and is prone to breaking / blowing speakers. I'll give you $150 for it and take it off your hands (to uh...sell for parts), and you can use that toward to a new unit.


EDIT: same with the speakers. I'll give you $200 for them and $100 for the sub. :thumbup:

I'm happy with my Dahlquist DQ20's and a Bryston 4B. I actually like them better than my previous DQ10's.

7 Piece system with speakers and a bunch of old reel to reels sold for $2900. I didn't plug it in, but it all looked brand new.

I agree...but I have a Bose Companion 3 system hooked up to my computer and it would blow any of that old huge shit outta the water.

I was gonna buy the 5 but it was another 150 or 250 and the system was already more than I needed. I love it. But of course...now I'm used to it and want louder so I shoulda bought the 5. lol.

I do miss the old bug stuff tho. My Dad had some tall speaker boxes and I was always fascinated by them as a kid. I still have his old 70's receiver and cassette player. It's at work, we use it everyday for the radio.

If you want loud, you need bigger speakers, period. Hoffmans Iron Law: small, loud, low...pick 2 ;) If you could have all 3, I wouldnt have made this thread :lol:

Chaa-Ching! This is a good answer. Trust me, if I could get away with awesome sounding speakers and have them hidden in a set of little cubes, I would. Instead, my wife and I constantly bicker about the floor standing speakers and subwoofer in the living room. Not to mention, we just had it out about the receiver sitting right in the middle of her "picture frame table"...it was on the shelf, until it started bowing and cracking. (its like 80lbs) If I could get away with a slim little receiver and some tiny cubes, I would in a heartbeat. Truth is, you cant reproduce the same sound out of little cubes and boxes that you can with the big stuff.
 
My old man has bose, I think My center channel, by itself, sounds better. I always liked my dads setup until I got my own with some nice towers, Its night and day.

The only person that doesn't like my setup so far... is my neighbors.
 
You can make big sound from a small driver, you just need the associated cabinetry to go with it. Ive seen 4" drivers in large cabinets that will hit 40Hz like nothing. Usually a Fostex or Mark Audio driver in a Bigger Is Better (BIB) cabinet, a transmission line, or a Voigt Pipe. My next cabinets shown above are Voigt Pipes. The cabinet itself is an acoustic instrument. Its designed to help augment the low end, as it uses the resonance of the cabinet to produce the low notes. Without such elaborate cabinetry, my drivers would struggle to hit even 50Hz at the low end. Now, with the proper cabinet, sub-30Hz is well within reach. Think of an acoustic guitar; but instead of the guitar body, how would it sound if it was just a plank of wood with strings?

EDIT: Just to show...these are Kleinhorns made by Nelson Pass. He designs some of the most famous Class A JFET amps. These are 8" Lowthers drivers, and they hit 18Hz with 4W of input power.
