The de-man-ification of speakers

WTF happened?

We went from this...

Exhibit A) Manly loudspeakers

to this?

Exhibit B) A modern (metrosexual?) "loud" speaker

What led us down the dismal road from A to B? What did our fathers know that we do not? Every household I visit now is infested with tiny, cheap plastic boxes, flimsy boom boxes and home-theaters-in-a-box, and wives gasp with laughter and roll their eyes when I suggest that their husbands/boyfriends, my friends, man up and get some real loudspeakers. "Over my dead body," is the clear pledge, sometimes spoken aloud with no shame. My friends roll their eyes sheepishly, and surreptitiously, say nothing. Such a shame.

Im with you They dont make em like they used too any more. When we were kids I had a friend who's parents had an old school Kenwood Reciever with 4 15" Cerwin Vega Subs and when he turned them the entire neighborhood knew it

sound quality over sound quantity (loudness)/

Ive never heard a small cube speaker best a large floorstander in sound quality or dynamics. Ive heard smaller speaker drivers (4" through 6") themselves do it, but with very large elaborate cabinets, not plastic cubes.

I would love to have a monster sound system, but I simply do not have the room for a pair of floor speakers that are 3'x4'.

My 20 yo Polk Audios, and a pair of 30+ yo Fried's.....FTW!!!.......Phuck pussy-ass speakers!! I wanna be bleeding from my ears by the 4 minute mark of Rush' Working Man......

I have a pair of Bose speakers that are 12" x 6" and are in a cherry wood case. they are great. But then I don't need to find '12' on my volume control that only goes to 10.

You cant even compare the top speaker to the bottom. The bottom is a POS blose cube. When I was selling home theater system we would say "no highs no lows must be bose". Back then they commited 50% of their operating budget to marketing. Think about that. I have a set of polk audio LSI series speakers in my basement. They shake the house nice and are only about 7 years old. There are still good speakers it is just harder to find with the trend of inwalls and wall hung TVs.

A wall hung TV shouldnt be an excuse to run garbage audio, but unfortunately it is. Ill never understand why somebody would want a home theater with a ginormous TV, then chop off its balls (speakers). Even if youre constrained for space, bookshelf speakers are very easily wall-mountable ;).

I think part of it is how we as a society look at technology. TV's are thinner and lighter and better than ever. Large dishes are out: now if you want sat TV, you have a small dinner plate plucking information from space. Naturally, people likely tend to think the same for speakers.

I look back only a year ago before Tin started dropping knowledge on me: a new Bose system hooked up to quality audio sounds a lot better than my dad's old system playing low quality audio. The line of thought it surely these new systems must be great! Blu Rays with BOSE>Blu Rays with factory TV speakers.

What people don't quite understand until they're told is that there's no way around acoustics. Once you see hear and learn this, there's no going back. In other words "you don't know what you don't know." I find the same problem happens all the time in my detailing work in which people can't believe we can spend so much time polishing a vehicle. Once you explain your clear-coat is more like a soft plastic and get them to notice swirls...well... there's no "un-seeing" swirls.

BTW, I'm LOVING my Klipsch KG5.5's. Even my gf has been loving them. She told me "if we ever break up, I'm taking the speakers." Thanks Tin...you jerk.

I've had my cerwin vega re30s since I was a little kid. Now I own a pair of at15s powered off a qsc pro audio amp. I love big speakers! No little bs for me.

The de-man-ification of speakers is directly related to the puss-i-fication of men.

Recent studies showed that it is the cause for the the recent outbreaks of once manly things becoming less manly.
The most recent de-man-ifications are being attributed to the the lack of testosterone thoughts men are having.

This is almost wholly accounted to the shift in thinking from the man camp please see exhibit A & B respectively

There are ways to reverse this they say and they are prompting any of you that may have these feelings or see these types of things happening in your life to go see your friendly Motown Muscle Ford Dealer (91Trunk).

Marketing, and nothing else.

Bose and Monster Cables are masters of it. They are the Kardashians of the audio world.

Love my 15 year old KLH huge floor speakers, center, and rears. Insanely cheap back then and they still sound better than most high end stuff today.

Old stuff is normally better than the new, but this would be one exception. You couldn't buy one one these back "then"....
