The ask Tin about audio thread

Update. I ended up getting the Marantz 1403 receiver(really couldn't justify the 1603 added cost). I also bought these speakers http://www.energy-speakers.com/home-theater-systems/?sku=TK-CLASSI-5-1

My plan would be to eventually upgrade the speakers at a later date, but to get myself going and on a budget I thought this would be the best route. I need to get these hung up on the wall. I'm still not sure if i should hang the center channel above or below the tv. The other speakers will be above the tv. Maybe I'll take a pic and post it later with my setup.

Ideally, you want all tweeters at ear level, since higher frequencies are directional, whereas lower frequencies are omni-directional.

Question....Have a pair of Advent A1103 bookshelf speakers....one has a blown x-over and i can't find the specs....any ideas on what to use?

You should be able to just read the values of the parts in the crossover and buy replacements. Inductors never go bad, check the capacitors and resistors.

Do you have any experience with indoor AM/FM antenna’s for receivers? I bought a receiver for the garage and the one wire antenna that came with it is a POS. I just want to pick up local stations without any static. I was looking at CNET and Newegg and the reviews are killing me. One guy says “best antenna ever” next guy says “total POS, stations actually got worse”.

Should I get amplified or just standard? Any other tips?

Thanks again.

Check out a radio shack, get the standard antenna that comes on the plastic rectangle. I messed with powered antenna's and nothing worked. Got a new type as mentioned above and it works very well.

Going to pick these up this weekend :) These drivers are like hens teeth. They were made by Electro Voice for Allied Radio from 1960 to 1962. These are Knight KN600HC drivers...they weigh a crazy 30lb each, have 5lb magnets, and large cast frames. Theyre a 2-way coaxial with a 12" polystyrene woofer and horn tweeter. These originally sold for $65 each, close to $500/ea in todays money. The frequency range is pretty good too...25Hz to 18KHz. Cant wait to get them playing this weekend. These drivers are very very very hard to come by. Theres hardly any info out there about them other than in old catalogs. People that own them love them, and people that dont own them either want them or dont know about em

What do you think about those Beats by dre studio headphones? I believe they are ~$200. I am looking for something to replace the little iPod earbuds I am currently using, for obvious reasons. What would you recommend for under 200. Thanks.

Beyerdynamics makes some killer cans and I'd recommend looking into the Custom One Pro's or DT770's in the 60ohm trim if you were originally thinking about Beats.

Great headphones with quality bass response. My brother in law has the Custom One Pro's and I was quite impressed.

That was my price range and I bought a pair of sennheiser hd558's . I bought them over the others I had listened to because not only did I enjoyed the way they had sounded but they were the most comfortable pair. If you are ever in the canton area you can come listen to them . I drive to the east side all the time if we set something up ill even bring them with me.go to a best buy that has a magnoliaroom they have a dozen higher end head phones you can listen to. You can even plug in your phone and listen to your own music.

Dont pass up IEMs either, theres some fantastic ones out there if you need something more portable. The manufactuers me, Mike, and Marc listed above all make them at various price points as well. Great if you need something a little more portable.
