TCF Bank FTL

Yes, it was just a few short weeks ago I posted the same title with a FTW at the end.

I deposited my check on Friday. So I paid a few bills that are due around the 20th of this month. They're scheduled to come out Monday.

My card gets declined at the store, so I call.

Worst customer service ever. If anybody know how Arab's talk, that's how he spoke. It's annoying as hell. Once I found out that they "hold" all checks for 3-5 business days, I told him that it was unacceptable and I need them to release the money NOW. It's a certified check, and I've NEVER had to do this. I could have gone to my Credit Union and they'd have cashed it and given me every bit of the check in cash.

So, the kid starts talking loud and talking over me. So I spoke to his supervisor and she was even worse. Basically told me, "Fuck off, it's in your 'pamphlet', you should have read it. Oh, that 80 page booklet? Yeah, sorry I didn't study it.

Holding checks for that long is unacceptable by today's standards. So when I told her I paid all my bills and they'd be coming out she told me "That's all on you, you're going to have to pay any fee's because this information was all in your pamphlet."

Wow, I've never had worse customer service. When the guy first answered the phone it was loud as hell. I told him "Dude, I can't hear you, it sounds like you're driving with the window down."

"Oh, sorry, hang on....Ok, can you hear me now?"

Fucking dufus. Neither of those people should be in customer service. All they have to do is apologize up their ass, pretend like they're looking into trying to release it, and say "Sorry it's company policy, I'd release it if I could, I wish I could help, it isn't me it's the company, etc..."

You never tell a customer, "You're wrong, fuck off, read the fine print" which is basically what they said.

Also, when I deposited the check, they didn't say anything about a hold. That would have been REALLY nice. They even gave me 600 cash out of it and deposited the rest. She should have said "BTW, I can give you this cash as a courtesy, but don't write any checks or try to use your card because this check will have to clear and that will take until the middle of next week."

So I had to race to the bank and put cash in to cover what I paid out. Also, what's up with just putting a "balance" on the receipt. Never heard of current and available, TCF??

From my balance sheet, I had 1900 to use, I didn't know that 99% of it was "current" and not "available."

I hated Chase, but that's the difference between a REAL bank who is BIG and up front about everything, and little shitty banks like TCF who are open late 7 days a week and sucker you in with little perks like ATM's at every 7/11 that don't mean shit, and then hide all their bullshit.

Who in the FUCK makes you wait 5 business days to clear a god damn check?

So once my check clears, I'll be pulling all my money out and finding another bank.

A big bank at that. I couldn't believe how fast that kid flew off the handle. Yelling, talking over me. They need to be more careful about who they hire. I MIGHT have stayed with their bank had it not been for him, but because of a 19 year old piss on customer service rep, I'll be taking my business elsewhere.

Go open an account at DFCU and move all of your money there. I just deposited a check from the guy who bought my truck. (Certified check from Bank of America) They didn't put a hold on any of it.

Yep the hold thing sucks. I would have to go in and cash my check and then deposit the cash. Then I got a real bank!

I tend to agree considering when I write a check it clears the following day.

All they have to do is apologize up their ass, pretend like they're looking into trying to release it, and say "Sorry it's company policy, I'd release it if I could, I wish I could help, it isn't me it's the company, etc..."

That's crap man. They don't owe you anything. It's not their problem you were ignorant of their policies. If you were depositing a large check you could have inquired about holds..

Also if you are the type that runs your account to near zero they probably don't want your business anyway.

Maybe try the credit union route.

i have never had that problem in the 6 years i been with tcf, i have withdrawn money and wrote checks the same day i deposited checks, sometimes it would temporarily put my account in the negative but it would be fine onces the checks cleared.

I've never had that problem with my credit union, everything is available instantaneously. However, when I did buy my motor from out of state a few years ago I sent a rather large certified check and was really pissed off when the seller's bank wanted to hold it for 7-10 days before clearing it, and at the time I was in a hurry to get it and he wouldn't ship until it cleared.

National Shitty is the same way as well, we have a business account with them and any checks I deposit won't be available until the next business day, that's just their policy. My brother has a savings account with them as well and it usually takes at least a day or two for anything he deposits to show up, including pay checks.

It's called customer service man. Nobody said they owe me anything, but to argue with a customer isn't right. They needed to go about it differently. And since I've NEVER had a bank hold a check, why would I inquire? I didn't know it existed.

I just opened this account a couple weeks ago, I deposited 600 in. This was the first time I've cashed a check there. I don't run my account to almost nothing, and even if I did, I'm sure they'd still want my business. I don't think they mind 2500 deposits every 2 weeks, man.

I had JUST stopped using my credit union, only because I'm all the way in Dearborn and it's in Lincoln Park on Fort Street.

And yeah I was ignorant to their policy, too bad I had to find out the hard way. It would have been better to cash it at my CU then deposit it, since I was actually in that area.

They held a payroll check for 3-5 days? That doesn't sound right. Maybe one of the Banker's here will chime in on that. There is a big difference between normal check and payroll check as far as hold times.

That was my impression as well. It wasn't like it was a personal check.

My credit union will cash a personal out of town check, right there on the spot. I sold some Cobra Brakes to a guy in PA, he sent a check, and I told him there would be a wait to clear it.

I went in and I asked the wait " there is no wait on that sir"

Most smaller institutions will hold checks to avoid losses...cashiers check, payroll check, personal check...they do it all the time. If you build a good relationship with your institution, chances are your checks wont be held. At the credit union I work, we hold all checks on brand new members...it dont matter what kind it is. Once we get acclimated to your banking habits, you will seldom get a hold. Theres so much check fraud these days its rediculous...holding a check is just a precaution to suffering a loss. A lot of the tellers will hold checks to cover their own asses. If you get immediate credit for a large check and it bounces, that could mean the tellers ass. Financial institutions have bond insurance to cover losses. If a bond claim is made on an employee, they probably wont be able to get a job at a financial institution again. Whos to say somebody didnt cut you a fake check? There are plenty of perfectly legitimate looking checks out there that are not good. Check fraud is nothing new. If they dont know you they will probably hold the check. A rule of thumb many institutions go by...if you have the cash in the account to cover the check incase of a loss, it wont be held. Typical check hold policies are 2 to 3 business days on local checks, and 5 to 7 business days on out of state checks.

Yeah, makes perfect sense, I just wasn't aware. I thought TCF wasn't a "smaller institution" tho. I thought they were pretty big.

Besides, can't they call Chase to verify right over the phone that the check is valid? There's really NO legit reason to hold a person's money for 5 business days.

They told me my funds would be available by Tuesday at the earliest, or later in the week.:bs:

A lot of institutions dont verify funds anymore because of the Bank Secrecy Act. Verifying funds is a gray area, since some information is being released about an account. Sometimes a bank employee may do it, and sometimes they dont. Its a crapshoot. Dont ask outright if they verify funds, just call and tell them you want to verify funds.

ACTUALLY happened to me with my dividends check last year. TO top it off it was from Morgan Stanley and they stated they had to verifiy the funds. I physically HAD to go to the BANK (TCF) and have them call MS to "verify the funds."
Wouldnt have been that big of a deal but needed to funds for another investment THAT DAY....it was a HUGE hassle with NOT a lot a help from the bank. LUCKILY for me they looked at my account and saw the dollar amount that goes through my account on a monthly basis and they "approved" it after I called the District manager. I still bank with TCF but now take precautions NOT to get in that situation again.
