sump pump hell ...

just replaced my sump pump this morning and it has not even been a year yet since I bought this unit.
Rigid 1/2hp non submersible.

The problem with the other pump was the switch was stuck on and I feared it was going to burn the pump up.

Home Depot was great because I had the receipt for the pump that wasn't even a year old yet and they gave me a brand new pump and I just took the other one back with no problems.

This new pump works great now. Rigid really stands behind their stuff.

even though it says "MADE IN CHINA" right on it...

sucks living on a high water table. going to be putting in trench drains out to the ditch really soon too..

that sucks, wasn't that long ago that was installed

the receipt said 3/28/08

so not even a year yet. it was a bad switch and noboby sells just those parts.

seems like they would. It would have been easier just replacing the switch for sure.

but Rigid has a lifetime warranty on all their crap. Says to replace the switch every 2 years and it hasnt been a year yet..

They must not have much faith in their labor market huh?

Saved myself a $100

My friend in town just replaced his sump pump
switch.

I just had to replace my 9 year old sump
pump switch float, they don't sell just the floats,
so I made one from a bottle and a straw!

thats kool. I want to figure something else out with my setup. My pump runs constantly and it runs the electric bill up.

Im going to put a 4 foot overhang on my roof when I replace my roof this summer and the trench drains too and put the downspouts in the trench drains. just need to keep extra water away from my house.

Ridgid is made by Home Depot and carry a lifetime warranty, I went to flow tech because every time I went to home Depot they were out of stock (Ridgid) and no one else carry's them, I got 1 flow tech from Meyers (sp?) and 1 from Home Depot with full life time warranty so I have 2 stores to return to

Simply by extending my downspouts an extra 4'
from the house really did help cut down on how much
my sump pump runs.

Don't forget to "mound up" the soil to drain away from
the house footings - it's a simple thing, but a much
overlooked thing.

I had a plumber install a water powered back up pump at my mothers home. Called around and got pricing, most were 8-900 bucks. I forgot, a regular customer of mine was a plumber...he did the entire job for 200 bucks. talk about mark up.

They require a 3/4 water pipe to operate. Cost is reflective on how much copper needs to be run. hers was about 10-12' away.
Once installed your suppose to trip the float every once in a while to keep it in working order.
It was well worth the moneys spent.

The cool thing about Ridgid's is you dont need the receipt or the box to return it if/when it fails. Just take it in, and get a new one.

Homegaurd or a Sump Buddy from the Home Depot? It is a good idea to spray the float switch on those with WD40 once in a while. The moisture from the sump can cause them to hang up. Those pumps are about $100, plus close to another $100 in pipe and fittings.

i dont know the brand. Ill check and see. its what ever brand the plumber installed, and i dont think he shops @ home depot or lowes. im sure he deals with plumbing supply houses.

I need to know how to do this. Im hooked up to city water here too.

We install Zoeller sump pumps on occasion when installing radon systems and they are great pumps. Mine runs every 60 seconds and i've never had an issue in 9 years

These battery back up power for sump pumps don't
run very long before the battery drains - then you're
right back where you started from!

A better plan would be to add that money to a little
more and simply buy a generator and now you can
not only save the water in your sump, but you can
save the food in your refrigerator, have lights on to
see, etc.

they arent talking about battery backups, but rather city water powered pumps. city water never goes out (or shouldnt at least) so you dont even have to be home for these pumps to work. you do have to be home if the power goes out to hookup the generator.

i know ive posted this pic a lot but you get the idea:
