Steering/Alignment/popping noise question for the Foxbody Folks

Took my car in for a front end alignment the other day and they said that they were unable to get the alignment set. The alignment would change whenever they moved the steering wheel from side to side. They were wondering if the rack bushings were bad causing the whole rack to shift or if the rack itself was having issues. I have been noticing a "popping" noise when I steer which is probably the same issue whatever it is. Anybody experience this before and know how to fix it?

Thanks!

Thanks Dave, I'll take a look at those items starting with the bushings. It's a 1989 Mustang GT. Some of the parts were transferred from a wrecked vehicle but I never had issues getting the alignment sorted or with a "popping" noise when the car was first built. Engine/suspension has about 155K on it. The chassis probably has quite a bit more.

do a good front end inspection & pay close attenation to the ball joints you will have to load the suspension
