Sport Bikers in here......

tip no matter what bike you get:

Frame Sliders pleaseeee, cheap investment that can save alot if you go down. Also invest in the proper riding gear like a nice pair of gloves and other accesories.

Start off with a 600...at least she can use the power when she needs it...The 250/500 cant even get out of it's own way.....I do agree that Bikes are dangerous and that the only reason the Japs sent them here is it's payback for the Atomic Bomb.:chairfall

She's just ridden on the back of some Harley's but no "sport bikes." I've never ridden at all except some ATV's. We're both 21 (as if it matters).

Usually I would tell someone it would not be a good idea to pick up riding,(on the street) at this point of their life if they hadn't rode before.

However I am not going to preach to you, just something I would tell a family member etc...

I would invest in couple older 600's around 2000+. You can usually find them around $3k and in good condition.

A few of us have bikes, Pm me if you get one.

Definitely wise to start out on a 250 or a 500, beginners shouldn't be on 600 SS bikes IMHO.

a 250 is plenty fast enough to get yourself hurt you just won't win every race.. they have 250cc classes in road racing so to say they are too slow in normal traffic is rediculous on so many levels.

best real bet is to buy something that is $2500 or less so you won't loose your ass when she doesn't like it a year later. remember that most bikes 2000 and older are dropping heavily in price because of their looks being so outdated so you should be able to find something reasonable. if you don't know about bikes find a friend who does. it's extremely easy to hide things on bikes as far as problems and issues. this is the last thing you want considering if something goes wrong.

go as small and light as you can so that she can feel safe on it and make sure that she takes as many defensive riding courses as possible, practice alot on the weekends and have fun! bikes are great... not in busy areas but we all know that!

also remember 600 at the most is fine and you can always detune it if the bike becomes too much for the rider. with the cc comes extra weight, width and so on so it should all be considered. lowering is a good way to help with height problems but it isn't always the answer as there is much more too it. if she is that small of a person that you have to lower it too much it isn't always meant to be so find another bike..

roller coasters have a ride height for a reason... bikes are the same. good luck!

If we can't start riding at 21 when would a good time to learn be? IMO now would be the best time since "most" kids drive recklessly until they are atleast 18 (longer in some cases).

IMO we're both level headed people w/ clean driving records (I'm in my senior year going for Mech. Eng'g @ LTU, and she own's her own business doing in-home dog training). We're not just a couple of young kids that wanna get bikes. I know a bunch of guys at school that ride and I know that it wouldn't be me or her to worry about but all of the other d-bags on the road.

That being said....Thanks for the advice and we'll keep our eyes peeled for some rides! I'd like to have one by next summer (be nice to ride to and from work and school).

Again don't go w/anything smaller then a 600...Believe it or not a 600 is way more stable then a 250 or 500!!I have taught 3 girls this past summer how to ride,One being on a 500 and she did not feel comfortable on it at all,The way she sat upright, It was to tall,Very unstable feeling for her!!!Put her on a zx10(and on my busa) while we lowered her 500 and she did perfect no problems at all!!The other girls were put on 600's and were fine...All were lowered of course.Sh*t i got on her 500 and felt unsafe LOL...I wouldn't do that to anybody ;-)

don't know how long you have been riding and don't want to steer the thread but if your "teaching" people and saying anything smaller then a 600 is a waste that's unfortunate. opinions are opinions though.

as for being level headed enough to ride hell there are people at any age that aren't level headed enough. experience is the real key and even the most experienced people get into trouble.

it's a great idea, just be smart... do your homework and be careful!

I never Felt right on the Smaller 600cc bikes Either.

That Upright seating sucks, I hated my old 06 R1 Because of it. Im tall though so maybe thats why I Perfer The Busa, That and its just a little bit faster than the R1 ;)

Have you ridden a 250 or 500 to be able to compare the two against a 600 or bigger cc bike???

Frame sliders? thats what insurance is For :dollar:

Make Sure you wear the gear all times that way WHEN you go down hopefully the Road Rash Wont be as bad! (Everyone Goes Down)

lol, I'm telling you right now.

If you start riding with a 600 sport bike, you will wheelie when you dont wanna wheelie, and you will fall.

Its too much power for a person new to bikes, terrible idea.

OK. I'm going to dig this up from a couple of months ago....

My g/f is getting a 500cc Ninja around May sometime (she got a STEAL on this so I wouldn't let her pass it up). We're both enrolled in the Basic Riders class @ MCC if thats worth anything...I guess they wave some fee @ Sec. of State if we take this course too.

Anyways, I'm just wondering what good sites there are to find some decent bikes aroudn here. I've checked Craigslist and Cycletrader. I'm thinking about a CBR600...Should I look into a dealer (like Finishline or someone else)
