gonna do an oil change on the GTS soon and it came from the factory with mobil 1. Just curious if there is anything better out there? I saw an episode of horsepower TV and they gained 14 horse on just switching to royal purple!!!! :headscrat

stick with the factory recommended Mobil 1. And Costco, has good deals on it from time to time  That's all I use in the C5 and my Daily Driver

I use Mobil 1 in my cars. Wife's leases get regular oil.
my dad bought a brand new dodge ram 5.9l in 2001. He put 200,000 miles on the thing without ever doing a freaking oil or filter change. Every month he'd just add a quart of valvoline 10w40 :lmao: thing still runs great

When I first started using synthetic oil, I used Mobil 1. Second I used Royal Purple. I now use Amsoil and plan to stick with it long term. I will never use mobil one again, just did not seem better for some reason.

You obviously then shouldn't be worried about which synthetic to use? Any of the ones you mentioned are good.

I use mobil 1 in my stang'. Never had a problem with it. I've used royal purple and amsoil before but never could tell a difference between them or any other synthetic. Hell, my bro always used nonsynthetic ford motorcraft oil in his drag car and never had any issues.

I use Mobil 1. I've changed the oil in my Ranger every 5K and the inside looks at clean as a newborns ass. I used 5W30 in my Suzuki Swift GTi when I raced at Waterford with the RPM's between 4K and 7K. Never a failure and never a heat issue. I pulled the engine after scraping the car and the insides look great.

I saw someone mentioned Castrol, but their base stock is a semi-synthetic. It's half dino and half syn. Castrol only sells straight synthetic in Europe. VW dealers import the stuff because they can't get it here. And then the manual states you should use full synthetic Castrol. Get your oil changed outside the VW dealer and you threaten your warranty because you didn't use full synthetic.

Your '710' cap has all the recommendation you need.

Arguably, the best synthetic oil is Amsoil. You can visit their web site and see the scientific data preformed by independent research labs the data that compares Amsoil to other synthetic oils, using industry standard tests.
However, in many cases the difference is very small, and they point out which oils are close to Amsoil.
Most premium synthetic oils are very good oils.

I run Redline in my Vette. Mobil 1 has changed their formula over the last few years to meet new EPA regulations, it is NOT as good as it used to be. I wouldn't put that Royal Purple garbage in my lawnmower.

The Redline stuff is excellent too. I used their ATF in my 5-speed. Great stuff. Anything under a 20W50 sold for street use has been changed to meet newer requirements. I used Brad Penn oil for breakin and flat tappet cars. Newer cars with roller lifters don't need near the zinc an older car does. Mobil 1 'Racing Oil' still has all the zinc. As for Amsoil, I don't buy test results from a producer of a product. I'm not saying it's bad, I just don't think their results mean much.

It seams to me Valvoline had a good synthetic, but then changed their base stock to semi-synthetic. This isn't gospel so read the bottle. But for me, there is Mobil 1, Redline, Brad Penn (dino) and everyone else.

Did I mention that opinions on oil are like talking politics, sex or religion?

Not true. VW dealers don't import oil, they purchase it here through VW. In addition, it does not state in our owners manuals that you have to use synthetic oil. It states that you have to use an oil that meets VW spec 502.00 on gasoline engines and 505.01 on the pumpe duse diesel engines, 504.00 or 507.00 on common rail diesels (it is a low ash oil). There are mineral based oils that meet these requirments as well as full synthetic that meets the specs as well.

In addition, you can get Castrol oil in the US in full synthetic.

Lastly, just for reference, Mobil 1 meets the 502.00 spec.
