Roller rocker adjustment

Ok. I have a carbed 302 and I just put a new cam, heads, and 1.72 scorpion roller rockers on. I read through 100's of posts and watched hours of YouTube videos on how to set the rockers and not a single method is alike. Seems like everyone has a different method and idea. I am wondering if anyone on here would be willing for a price to set mine. Obviously the car does not run so it would have to be done at my home in Rochester hills. I am really worried about setting them wrong and causing damage to the cam, heads, or rockers. So would rather pay someone who is confident and has a tried and true method. Again I'm in Rochester hills and am not asking for free. I will pay. Thanks.

It is very easy. As long as you are close to the proper adjustment you will be fine. The more accurate the more power you stand to gain. It is very easy, just pull the valve covers (and intake if you want to go with a visual on the lifters) then follow the steps outlined in your rocker's specific adjustment.

What is your recommendation on the pre load? I have seen everything from 1/8 to a full turn past zero lash. Thanks.

Make sure the lifter is on the base of the cam for the specific rocker you are adjusting. Spin the pushrod with one hand and run the rocker nut down with the other. Once you feel slight resistance when spinning the pushrod, go 1/4 turn and lock it down. Move to the next.

That is the procedure that I followed.

I live at South Blvd and Livernois and can come out and show you how to do it. I have all of the stuff and it is pretty easy. You didn't say if it is a hyd or solid cam, but the method is the same...

If you want to do it yourself, this is how....
When adjusting the valves you need to be able to “bump” the engine over or be able to turn the engine over by hand. Turn engine over in Normal direction. You can do 1 side of the engine at a time.

Locate the Intake and exhaust valve on a cylinder. While watching the EXHAUST Valve turn the engine over until you see the EXHAUST VALVE start to open. At this time check/adjust the INTAKE valve for that cylinder.

After you adjust the intake valve, turn the engine over again. Watch the INTAKE valve you just adjusted. You will watch this valve open all the way and then right before it closes, stop turning the engine and adjust the EXHAUST valve for that cylinder.

This Guy (Gary - grr456) is deep in reassembly of his new Chevelle and still offering up a hand to a member. Gary if I could give you more rep I would...better yet "WE" all should buy you lunch for your continuous generosity.

Gary. I would really appreciate if you did help or Atleast double check my work. That's what I really want is someone to show me how. I will still compensate u for your time. I am not far just avon rd and Rochester.

And yes what a guy to offer up the help. Everyone on here deserves a rep bc I have always Been given good advise on here. That's what this whole thing is about right?

and instead of feeling for the rotational drag of the pushrod to increase, I usually lift the pushrod up and down, feeling for the freeplay while tightening the rocker, one the freeplay goes away, I rotate the nut 1/4 turn, snug the set screw up, then rotate both the nut and set screw(via allen wrench) an additional 1/4 turn, for a total of 1/2 turn of preload, and almost a garantee that it wont loosen

Basically this. I wait till there is decent drag on the pushrod and also check for vertical play. Look at youre cam card. Depending on the cam card/cam specs it will want anywhere from a 1/4 to 1 full turn extra. As SuperStang noted, make sure you are on the back side of the lobe. Lastly, there is no real way to properly set pre load if the lifters are not primed.

Very nice member, extremely helpful and knowledgable as well.

Thanks to grr456 I got my rockers all set. I was making a easy job complicated by over thinking it. Thanks again Gary for the help and instruction. A real standup guy to offer help and go out of his way to come to me "a total stranger". Thanks to all that people that offered advise.
