Rol oil pan gaskets

Anyone use them? know of them? are they a quality gasket?

It seems I just blew apart my 2nd one in my car this summer. I have yet to get under the car, but last night when I got home from taking my old man for a spin, I parked the car in the driveway idling and moved stuff out of the way so I could park the TA. When I got out I noticed a 8" puddle in the driveway, along with a heavy trail of drops leading down to the garage. There were no trails or drops to speak of when I pulled the car out, or coming in or out of the driveway. What gives?

I have put about 25 miles on the engine since I replaced the gasket. Both sides were RTV'd and let set. The first gasket disintegrated when my Holley carb dumped about 2 quarts of gas into the carb and I didn't have time to take care of it. The entire rear hoop over the rear main adapter had disintegrated, most of which ended up in the pickup screen for the oil pump.

The motor originally had a Fel-pro gasket, but it over hung the skirts of the block and seemingly was snagged by the crank at some point.

I'm getting disappointed with this motor, anyone have any suggestions aside from making my k-member a 3 piece unit?

wtf? Dude we JUST replaced this! Rol and Felpro are 2 of the top gasket brands out there. I seen the first snagged by the crank, seen the 2nd made brittle from gas, wtf happened on this one? Search the boards and see if you can find a different Oil pan. Maybe that $30 one you found isn't letting it seal/seat good enough. In turn almost leaving the gasket loose and with a bit of pressure it just blows out?? Is it coming out of the back again or a different spot? Holy run on paragraph Batman!

This wasn't the 30 dollar pan.... That one we never used cuz it didn't even sit right on a bare shortblock.

You might be on to something, but the thing was tight on the gasket from what I could tell with the motor still in the car. The pan wouldn't sit against the block because of it fitting tight until bolts were snugged.

I'm 95% positive it's coming out of the back again, but I have yet to crawl under it

2.5 weeks.... as long as my boss isn't too lazy to read my thesis and sign it. Last time I tried, he read about 5 pages and gave it back, saying he needs to read it in bursts....

Anyone have luck welding an oil pan to a block? lol

I always use the 1-piece gaskets, put them on w/ no silicone and be done w/ it. Fel-pro, and MR. Gasket make great ones, both have insrets so you cant over-tighten and tweak the pan

I've been using the one piece gaskets, and I don't think I over-tightened it, and i thought it had steel inserts around each bolt hole, but that may be the culprit.

Gasket #1 (Fel-pro)

Only pic I have of the @nd gasket (Rol) on photobucket... have pics of the chunks and gasket on the camera still, have to pull them tonight.

Dude you are never going to finish that thesis.... haha.

You are down 1 felpro and 2 Rols at this point. I highly doubt you just have that shitty of luck with getting defective parts. Try the 305 Pan with a new gasket next time around.

I could, if pans for 1 piece and 2 piece blocks are the same..... Maybe this afternoon i'll visit some parts site and see if stock replacement pan P/N's are the same for a 80-85 gen 1 block as a 86-up gen 1 block

I'll finish it, just not in time for them to say I graduate in December, I'll get it approved like a week too late is my bet.

Oh yeah, forgot that 305 was a different rear main. I was thinking you got a new one because you didn't want to use the haggard old pan.

Thanks, Prostreet377, I'll have to look into that.

Anyone have a recommendation on what kind/brand of stock capacity pan to get for this 87-up (one piece rear main) style SBC? I have on it now a stock replacement from GM, and it seems to not like the thicker one piece gaskets like Felpro makes. Or should I stoop and get the cheapo thin multi-piece gaskets?

you are using the steel rails that go between the oil pan and bolts right?

the only gaskets for the late model engines are the the single piece gaskets you cant use the old 4pc on them. Also if you are the getting the upgrade 1pc gasket for the old style block it will not work. your gasket has to be for a late model block.

Ive built douzens a late modle chevy engines using a fel pro gasket and never had a leak that i knew of. I dont use RTV except for a small dab in the corners.

-He's using the rails.
-He's been through 3 gaskets in about 50 miles. 1 felpro and 2 Rols.

That sucks man. When I built my small block for my camaro I found NOS pan on Ebay. Was something like $70 but that isn't bad. Even for a 15-20 year old pan.
