Road trip and compound bows

I'm looking at going to milan dragway with my oldest son possibly this Saturday and heard there is a cabellas not too far south from there. I'm interested in getting into archery and would like to eventually purchase a compound bow. At the moment it's just doing research but are there any mm members that might give me pointers to look for? Thanks in advance.

Here come the for sale ads!! :) I bet you could get into a used one cheap, maybe even delivered to the track. Ha

Here is pointer. Shoot a lot of different bows. I don't shop at cabelas so I don't know if they let u or not but go somewhere that will. I have owned at least a dozen bows and some as cheap as $300 some as much as $2000. And they all felt different. Dont let anyone push a certain bow on you. They are much like cars. People pick a brand and stand by it. But doesn't mean another manufactur can't make a great product. And yes as autoroc said the used market is huge. A lot of guys buy new every year. So tons of good stuff out there. Good luck and glad to here it includes your oldest son. Archery is a great thing for father son.

I am a field staff shooter for PSE and Darton Archery...I'd be MORE then happy to talk archery with you...Most of the time, you can spend more $$$ on the accessories then the bow.

The MOST IMPORTANT thing when getting into archery is PROPER FORM and DRAW LENGTH...The box stores like Cabelas, Gander Mtn and Bass Pro may not take into consideration those important issues.

My solution to that is to find a reputable archery pro shop...I can recommend some to you, depending on your area.

Shoot me a pm if I can help you out.

Thanks !!

Stop at Adams Archery, not far from New Boston they were great in setting up my bow for me. I bought a used Parker, sent it to Parker and had it redone, got a great bow for less than half the price of new, way more than i expected to have. I was trying to get into it cheap as it was my first bow and i wasn't sure if i would like shooting. They got me in, verified the draw length, and put all my accessories on and walked me through form and helped set up and tune the sight. I coudln;t have asked for a better service and the prices were good. After they got me all set up, they let me stay and shoot on the range.

Stuka, i have a QAD drop away rest and it seems a bit noisey. I have the one that doesn't bounce, i think it was the pro series. Anyway, since currently i only shoot for fun, but i may start hunting this fall. My question as a newbi, is there really that much of an advantage to this rest over a regular old style 2 finger rest? I don't have an issue where i need a captured rest. I don't like the whisker biscuits, do you have a recommendation for a decent rest that isn't a million dollars?

SOrry for the hijack.

No worries, I'm glad you posted because it's more information for me too. I'm going to check that Adams archery out I think too. I didn't realize how important it will be to get measured for bow draw. That's exceedingly important for me because I have freakishly long arm s lol. All the extras seems to be where they get you..damn, why does this feel like buying a car..never simple lol. I'm very appreciative of the post guys thankyou.

Billy...

QAD makes a great rest, but I like simplicity...Vapor Trail makes a rest called the Limb Driver...It attaches to either the top or bottom limb, and is in fact the FASTEST of all drop aways. They offer both a full capture and non...New they retail about $100.00...Used they run about $40.00.

They are simple to set up, and never slack...Cables which attach to your current rest will stretch, and your rest will slow down and not drop completely.

Any other questions, let me know.

Thanks, Jim

Set up is EVERYTHING, most important draw length! I had a hard time finding a used bow because i have a long arm span. I draw 31" and alot of what i came across was set up for 28-29. I shot a 29 my nephew had, and i was ok with it, when i switched to the 31 it was a night and day difference. Im confident at 30 yards now and i've only put about 60 arrows down the bow. Options are endless when it comes to bolt on's...lol. I went with a cheaper sight and besides being a little finicky with adjustment, it works great for me. I do regret however the rest, i like doing more with less, and the rest seems over complicated for what it does. Should have stuck with a standard rest as i think it would have served me fine. But you don't know untill you use them! Good Luck!

I'll look into those, but i may just return to old school and put a standard 2 finger rest back on! Like i said, you never know if you like something until you try it.

Mor archery shop on Van dyke between 21 and 22 mile, shares part of the building with close quarters tactical.
They have a range and a decent selection. The more ppl you talk to the more you'll learn

Speedy that's my side of town and a excellent suggestion. Had a good time at milan dragway with my son (minus some light rain delays) also did cabelas it's like a adult Xmas store lol. I received a lot of good info today but am a few weeks out of a purchase.
