Chris Osgood blocked shots, one after another. Not during the game. After the game.
Osgood stood in the Red Wings’ dressing room Thursday night, a playoff win under his belt and a chip on his shoulder. You will not find a more amiable athlete of his stature anywhere. The man could get along with Hannibal Lecter. But Osgood had finally had enough of all the questions about him and his, uh, weak-linkishness.
"I told you guys I felt good the last 15 games," he said. "Sometimes people make up stuff, that I don’t feel good."
And: "I’ve played for 15 years. I have the most wins in playoff history — in Red Wings history — for a reason. It’s not because I’m a bad goalie."
Yeah, but you did struggle in the regular. ...
“I’m not thinking about the regular season,” Osgood said. “I’m living in this moment right now. I’ll live in the moment Saturday. The regular season is what it is. I’m still 10th all-time in wins, so I can’t be that bad.”
This was unusual for Osgood. But if you’re a Wings fan, you have to like it, almost as much as you liked Osgood’s 13 first-period saves. Taken out of context, Osgood might sound defensive. But context is everything.
This is the same player who has admitted he played poorly for much of this year. The same guy who said “things piled up in my head” from October to January. And the same goalie who kept the Wings in the game in the first period, then watched them win it in the second and third.
So he has a right to take exception when people define him by a four-month aberration in his career. He did help this team win the Stanley Cup last year, after all.
“I’ve always been a guy that just likes to play,” he said. “I don’t mind answering questions. I get mad when people assume what I’m thinking — not that I read it — or say how I’m feeling, when it’s completely not the truth. I don’t mind if somebody says I played poor when I did. I mind when somebody says something about my mental makeup. That’s when I get frustrated because I’m not even close to that. If I wasn’t mentally strong, and didn’t love playing this time of year, or know how to play, I certainly wouldn’t be in net today.”
