Problems with a shady shop

You don't need to preach to me about auto repairs laws. I know them inside and out. As I said, It probably posted in their waiting room, and on their invoice.
I know they are on my walls, both in my offices and in my shop and on my estimates of repairs AND ON MY PERMISSION TO INSPECT VEHICLE WAIVERS, WHICH I MAKE EVERYONE SIGN AND GIVE A COPY TO-NO EXCEPTIONS Even if vehicles are dropped off over night, before I touch it they get a email decribing in detail my terms, and I demand a email back, agreeing to the terms.

And, they need no written permission to charge 20 bucks for basic inspection

Ive been by that shop many of times. They block the entrances/exits when they are closed. Im positive they are not "new" to auto repair, and theirs a reason the lot is blocked at night. Im willing to bet they know their rights all too well.

Everyone knows the law states you can charge up to $20 without a signed written estimate. But STORAGE fees DO HAVE to be disclosed PRIOR to repairs - whether it be a publicly located sign OR on the estimate.... Otherwise EVERY crooked shop would start adding on storage fees and not disclosing them until vehicle pickup....

My shop has signage up warning of possible storage fees of UP TO $30/day (salvage/scrap yards are quicker to tow out the total losses this way and not leave my lot all cluttered with scrap...), as well as our labor rates....AND every customer is required to sign the repair order prior to repairs. AND they ALL get a copy of the estimate - per state laws. :)

It's people like the op's friend that drive me nuts. How can you expect anyone to work for free? When you go into work to you not punch in and work for free? Don't think so. So why is it expected for mechanics to work for free?

Trust me as someone who runs a service department we do a lot of stuff for free to help out customers. It's the right thing to do and it brings back business. But to bring your vehicle in for a diagnosis knowing already you're not going to have the work done there then expect them to look at it for free...C'mon. Pay the money that's rightfully owed then fix it yourself. It's easy as that.

Your assuming everyone knows about the law, not everyone knows about the 20 bucks.
I received a letter from the state in the last year that said storage fees could not exceed 10 dollars per day. I remember receiving it, I had to change my sign & work orders because of it.

I'm also not certain everyone knows its illegal to charge for repairs if they are not performed at a state licensed facility. I'm sure coldfusion would not like it if state inspectors visited him for violating the law.
Even suggesting someone to contact the state with out all the facts is just wrong. I would not wish that on anyone. This issue should be resolved with the shop owner and the vehicle owner, not in a public forum.
To even suggest the shop is "shady" without ever dealing with them personally, or even having all the facts is wrong.

I'm not condoning what he has said/done/wants to do... BUT.... I would like to see the letter you got from the state, because 2 months ago at the meeting I went too with the state enforcement and other shops (there were like 30 of us there) --- there was NO cap on storage fees BUT it did have to be disclosed prior to repairs beginning. I was simply stating what the laws are to people who were speculating.

Heck, most shops don't even follow the 48 hour rule of holding on to the old parts.....

did you check and see waht reiko wants for quick struts?

No he would rather waste the time and send his money to an internet company, instead of supporting local buisnesses and sponsors...have you not read this thread! (sarcasm intended) Oh, and i hope you don't need to warrenty through Rock....when Reiko would do a warrenty in a minute, might take a week for an internet company....Good Luck!

hahaha she got her car back. Im not a fool actually im just the person in the middle. I dont argue over the internet. I understand both peoples side of the story and dont really care either way, she paid the money and got the car back. I just have past problems with that place which fueled my rage in this situation.

SO anyways I dont really care anymore about this topic, im not a fool, no one else is a fool, just different opinions because many of you are on either side of the situation stating your opinion which I appreciate and understand.

I was having a bad day anyways and I went home and found a tree and beer and now life is good

CHEERS! :buds:

agreed some people are clueless and expect everything to be handed to them .

Wow... wtf is wrong with people. Taking your car into a shop knowing that you aren't going to have them perform any work on the car AND EXPECTING TO NOT HAVE TO PAY ANYTHING FOR THERE TIME! Not even enough sense to ask if there will be a check out fee, just expected it to be free. WOW

What next, walk into to a doctors office and get a diagnosis and EXPECT to not pay and then bitch if they want to charge you?

After all that BS, I asked her again if she signed anything prior to looking at the car and she said "yes". Im like WTF that was a waste of my time.....WOMEN. Piss me off. So im sorry for all the drama.
