Newest engine mod

Not visible...the hole in the front

At least I can kinda laugh about it now. Certainly wasn't funny when it happened. Car is at the shop now...should be fixed in a week or two (takes a while for the engine to come in).

Can't they overnight parts from Japan?

No rice...just lots of oil. Actually, I had to take all the aftermarket parts off the car in order to sell them...need to fund the engine replacement somehow. Oh well...

Not sure on the cause. My guess...it was leaned out from driving on the expressway for so long (the tune adjusts itself to your driving to maximize economy...I was getting an average of 38mpg at this point after ~800 miles of driving on the expressway). I got on it in a tunnel...slowed down by traffic and was passing someone and it went boom. Called about the warranty thinking it might be covered, but they said that it wasn't because I couldn't prove that it had regular maintenance (I do all my own oil changes and never thought to keep records of it). Plus all the aftermarket stuff would have raised a flag anyway...even if I took everything back to stock it would have been aparent that I was tinkering in the engine bay, and they would have flagged that and denied my claim.

if the tune caused this sounds like the tune was crap.

I beat on my car waaaaaaaaaay harder than you do and it never cracked a freaking block.

put it all back to stock, bring it to a dealer in metro detroit and have it warrantied. Those country stores are always way to willing to deny claims. City stores know that warranty work = garunteed paycheck.

Also, I dunno about Mazda, but Ford dealers only charge me like $32 for an 8qt oil change out the door.
1. thats CHEAP
2. the $3 you save doing it your self is not worth the time hassle or trouble if you have a warranty issue. I have my oil changed at the same dealer everytime so I dont even have to keep the paperwork, its all on file.

I will ask around for some "help" from a dealer down here and see what I can come up with.

HEY OVERBOOST CHIME IN!!!!!!

I appreciate the help, Shaun...but the ball is already rolling on this and I can't stop it now...repairs are already underway.

Well, if I could get it taken care of by warranty that's one thing...but the car is at the shop, in pieces, and an engine has been ordered. I'm not in a position where I can say "ok, stop...let me take it somewhere else". Now, if the bill can be covered by warranty after the fact, that's another story...I'd be all for that

the minute the engine was removed and torn down you were screwed

Ya but you dont have a power adder. A ton more cylinder pressure with a power adder. Break piston-piston peice stands up in chamber-rod breaks-block breaks. At least thats what happened to me.:ohwell:

Sorry man, but you got rammed by the dealer. There is NO WAY in hell they can void your warranty for not showing regular maintenance, like oil changes. I'd have them send out whatever oil they can to someone and do a UOA, just to prove the viscosity and wear was within spec. I had my MS6 modded pretty well, and took it in without mods and had two turbos replaced and never questioned. I even talked with the SM about the records and was told that it's at their discretion, and they encourage you to keep a record (I keep a spreadsheet), but it's not mandatory.

I wouldn't have bent as easy to get the ball rolling. Did cylinder 3 let go?

You bet your ass they can.

You have to have proof the vehicle was maintained according to the factory recommended maintenance schedule and if you can't you are fucked, plain and simple.

You have to be able to prove it was due to a manufacturing defect and not due to owner neglect or lack of maintenance, end of story.
