need some opinions to know if i made the right choice. work topic

I know people in quality who started at 60k per year with full benefits and travel expenses (change per mile driven) and also provide company vehicles.

Friend of mine just got hired as a quality engineer at Hi Lex in auburn hills. With your experience, you would probably get the same somewhere else.

Yeap, that's about what i see the going rate is in Michigan starting. at under 45k im making now and doing all this work alone, i know i can do better. Thanks for the tip.
 
With the exception of putting in your notice before having a new job I think you did the right thing. I realize 2 months is a long time but when your looking and most places have 2-3 interviews then a drug screen 2 months goes by pretty quick. Most places will be a little weary hiring someone that was willing to walk away from there job (even with 2 month's notice). Make sure you have a good answer when asked why you want to leave (or have left) your current position. Good luck there are a lot of places looking for good people. Now is the time to make a change.

I would have found work, but my dad has many businesses and i have a fall back if needed because of that. Were now in discussion of me opening my own business. maybe it was just fate to happen this way now. i hope

my family has been in many forms of business but currently we own a few liquor stores, gas stations, the adam & eve's downriver and Dearborn, and a few other items. Right now im looking at shops, towing companies, bars, liquor stores, gas stations, trucking companies, junk yards...just to name a few. The name of the game is location, and cost....gonna keep looking for that right deal.

i'd love to partner up with someone who already has something small running and expand it out but i don't see this happening.
 
Lots of good feedback in this thread. Work quickly and make the most of your 2 months.

If you are looking at certifications I would recommend some through the ASQ. CQIA can be done pretty easily, you might just study and test out on that. CQE could take a little more time but it's not that bad. There are other certs they offer you can look in to as well and they will help supplement your experience with some paper that future employers will look favorably on. You should also consider finding where and when your local ASQ meetings are held so you can network. You might meet someone from your future employer there.

bump this up with an update.

had a meeting last week and they asked me if i wanted to stay and we could talk figures. They also advised that they did research themselves and admitted i should be between the 50-65k mark. i said sure, lets see what you guys got.

fast forward to yesterday.....they offered me 3$ an hour and a small bonus check now, and then over the next 3 years a raise every year of around the same amount....just told them no, ill put a presentation together. (i was kinda a deer in the head lights at that offer....so you want me to work for 3 more years, run both plants and go to mexico before i even make it to the 60K mark which will put me 8 years in here. no way...)

Wrote up a very nice letter stating facts of the situation and in depth detail of what they are really asking of me and why i feel im not asking to much here. told them its 65K ad no benefits now and i can be locked at that for the next three years or that's it, im gone.

still waiting to hear the outcome.
 
I've been doing this now for 25 years. I think you made the right play. Being a young guy with no ties, you can go just about anywhere and be treated like dirt and be taken advantage of. Move around a bit and see what's out there. I'd love to tell you that sooner or later someone will see you and take care of you, but the reality is that everyone is looking out for them selfs. Create your own destiny while you are young. If you need some leads, let me know.

What was thier reason for not paying you what you are asking for (and what they say you deserve)

Also put a some thought into how much the benefits are worth (dollar amount)

Example (loose numbers) 65k and no benefits = 50k full benefits (depending on specifics)
 
Personally i would add in the benefits to your offer. and then take less money.

i know for myself just my health insurance that my company offers is about 8500 per year in savings to me. so even at 55-60 you;d be sitting very well
 
I never took the "we'll start you out low so you have room to grow" bs. You're worth 60K +benefits now, hold out.
 
i said no benefits because the company they use is trash. i have my own company, its about 7k$ per year and they are very good to me so i'd like to stay with them anyway.

hey didn't give any reason for why they wanted to start me low now. They always try to go cheep on things, or maybe they wanted to buy more time to find someone else to take my spot.


I found a great business venture im going to look at this weekend. if it works out, im jumping on it.
 
Hopefully it works out. Trying to cut corners and shortchange empolyees ends up costing companies more money down the road to hire and retrain but they dont see that. All they see is "we saved X amount of dollars" Usually the top positions get extra money by maintaining lower operating costs
 
25 is way too young to be wasting time in an under paid job at a company owned by a cheap ass.
2 months notice is absurd. 2 weeks tops. Beyond that you're asking to be walked out the door before you next job is ready for you.
Leave on good terms, no matter how shitty the company.
Make the job moves you need now before you're tied down with a family.
 
Can you run a laser tracker or a FARO arm? If so I could ask my work. I did what your describing twice to the same company. I had 3 jobs locked up wanting me, and went in to have a talk with management. They told me "oh well. If you feel you have to leave then here's the door". You should have seen the look on their faces when I told them "Ok thanks. You've made my decision very easy. I have 3 standing offers for more money, and can start tomorrow. I'll just get my things and leave now." It was a priceless experience LOL!!! Long story short is I make roughly 80k a year on 56hrs 6 days a week(5 10's and 6 on Sat.). BUT, I usually work 62-64hrs a week(cant turn double time down) PLUS quarterly bonus checks(40hr check), and a Christmas bonus that's been between $2,500-$5,000 every year. So the yearly gross goes up a considerable amount from the 80k. My insurance is awesome and tons of paid time off, holidays, and a paid 2 weeks off starting just before Christmas and coming back after the 1st.
