need some opinions to know if i made the right choice. work topic

so i've been in my job position for about 5 years now. i do quality and engineering for a company. i started with no experience and in a year i worked my way up to manager of both departments. i do TS16949 and ISO14001 audits and re-certs, head parts sorts and customer communications, help our PPAP department be sure we are sending correct documents and do sign offs on all, travel to plants all around the US when needed. i do it all as a one man show...no help. The work load is huge and follows me home just about every night. i also don't like some of the things that are done in the backround here. it's very unorganized and the owner is one of them guys who "its my way or the highway" even if its not correct for the situation..he also has his wife as the HR manager and she does not take peoples sides because they fight that she does not back his choices when she did take our sides in the past.

So 2 weeks ago, i get told ill need to get my passport to head to our plant in Mexico to do audits down there. now i don't make super great money (20k$ + no benefits a year under what i would make just starting at a different plant) because the guy is kind of a cheap ass. i decided that the money was not good enough to risk my life in a bad part of Mexico so since he did not want to meet me at what i would be making if i started at another plant, i gave him a 2 month notice that ill be leaving. now, i know what your thinking... "LOL a 2 month notice?". i care for the workers here and i wanted to give a generous amount of time for them to think about what they want to do and for me to set another person up on the system and bring them up to speed on the shit ton of work going on.

Think i'm asking to much here? with my 5 years experience, i can get a job in quality somewhere else. i have no family or kids so i can relocate if needed, and im only 25.

i dont need the smart ass comments so save them. This does not mean i dont want to hear your thoughts (positive or negative). This is more of an outside POV i'm looking for.

salary was less then 45k a year with no benefits and i do 45-50 hours a week minimum. haven't had a raise in a year and a half at least.

Thanks guys.....i feel i made the correct choice, but i just cant wrap my head around why someone would expect so much, for so little.

Not many business owners could give two fucks about their employees and the cheaper they can get someone to work for them the more profit they make.
I come from the school of thought "if you exceed your employees expectations they'll exceed yours" but that's far and few between these days.

Only thing I can tell you from my own experiences is to work hard for someone else until you can save up enough to pursue your own dreams. Do something you love and you'll never work a day in your life is what they say.

yea, i've been thinking alot lately about the do what you love thing. i think i may attempt to push myself on to this.
 
Deff made the right move..

2 month notice is kinda normal in my opinion, A gf of mine worked at bosch and she gave a decent notice as well. If you have an important job it is kinda critical they can find someone to get you to get up to speed before you leave.

that's what i thought, but a few guys hazed me for it...like "2 month notice...i never heard of that.." i just want to leave on a positive note....never know someday i may need to walk that bridge again.
 
Thanks for the opinions guys. makes me feel alot better knowing i made the same move others would have. my dad got on me a bit because the money is decent for my age and i've got "comfortable" here.
 
Sir, you definitely made the right move / decision. I predict years from
now you will be so happy you did this. Now is the time for an upgrade!

The problem with places like Michigan is with unemployment still
being so high, employers get to take advantage of this & offer less to
their employees who are competing for so few good jobs. Perhaps
your field of expertise isn’t this case, but many appear so.

Check out a place like Texas, where 4 out of the top ten economic cities
in the USA are in one state!

I believe this is exactly what I’ll be doing.

on a side note, why cant i just be a stripper? haha i can travel, see all the world has to offer, and make good money for a small amount of work hahaha dreams that will never happen....
 
Michigan isn't doing as bad as people may think, those with skills, good backgrounds are in demand and get hired. I went to TX in 2009 for work and came back to MI in 2011 pretty easily.
 
Definitely don't burn bridges, good move. Motown is a small town, I run into people I worked with 18 years ago, and a guy I co-op'd for when I worked for TRW in UPstate NY (!!) in 1994/1995 was in a meeting I had 2 weeks ago.
Don't be afraid of technical work in MI, the good jobs are out there, but as other said, might not pay as well as they once did. I took calls from head hunters. I started to break the "never talk about money first" rule, so I didn't waste my time with higher level positions being offered at the same or less than I was making.

On thay note, I set my bar at not leaving for anything less than a 20% pay raise.

Last thing. Do you have a degree or any certifications for your QA work?
 
First thing Pete is I would have secured a new job before giving my notice.... but that's just me. There lots of jobs out there... and lots of unemployment.
Second, I would not advise posting negative or possible illegal activity at your work on line. No such thing as privacy anymore. Keep it simple & smart.... say your looking to advance your career.
Third, moving on is always stressful & usually rewarding.

no certifications for QA work, i do have 5 years experience now though including the total construction of an ISO14001 system all on my own, and TS16949 total re-certifications and audits.

im not sure if ill stay in quality though.

as far as the new job, my family owns alot of businesses that i can work at that's why i wasent to worried about it. my dad and myself are evn in talks about me opening my own at this point so im thinking about going that route.

i did not mention where i work or anything or post anything un-truthful so i hope it should be fine.

it has been stressful, but i feel like the weights being lifted already from me and that i can do better then this.

How hard is it to get certified? Is it a test you take? Even if you don't stay in quality, certifications and diplomas open lots of doors. Certs don't replace degrees, but they still have value. Many recruiting companies don't even read resumes before they go through an automated scan that looks for key words. HTH.

X2 on what Rich said, I'd edit some of your first post. No need to have some of that info out there, no matyer how vague. As I noted, it's a small small town. Some of the Motown guys I've met ended up being friends of friends or working in my same building.
