My Turbo Install Thread

Yeah Chris stopped over the other night and got the ring off so I could get the bucket out. Thanks for his contact info.

Would a freeze plug stay put with boost? I may just fab a metal cover and bolt it down using the stock bolt from the EGR tube.

No problem. He's a good guy. Very knowledgeable and willing to help. :)

As far as the freeze plug and boost goes, IDK. :dontknow: Might be time for a used LS6 intake upgrade. :D

Tony, very impressive all the work you've done!! I would have to clean EVERYTHING though when I was in there. That'd drive me nuts!

Thanks. I have been wiping some stuff down as I go. I will probably simple green and rinse the whole engine bay down when I am done. I already wiped it clean for some of the pics. Too many greasy fingerprints for my liking.

lookin good tony, glad to see it so close and that bumper support fitting.

I'd have to agree with mx, give yourself some time to work out bugs, or if you take it anyways make sure you have everything to work on anything that may go bad.

Friday 07Sep07 - ITS ALIVE!!!!!!

Yup, I got it started tonight!

Started the evening with a run to the stores for oil and some vacuum fittings and clamps. Then took some more pictures of the brake line brackets for some of the guys with BMR K-members that were asking how I attached them.

First order of business was connecting the vacuum lines for the BOV's. Rigged up my own adapter as the 99 intake is different from the 00-02 one shown in the APS install manual. I think this will work for me. Needed a bigger connector for the heater attachment as the boot was too big for the APS supplied T-fitting. This was fun as the connection is on the back of the intake..... But I got it on. Woohoo!

I fabbed up an EGR block-off plate to bolt onto the intake and cover the hole that was left when removing the EGR.

Next was routing the breather hoses from the rocker covers to the intake pipes. Pretty straight forward. Then tie strapped the hoses in a few places to keep them put.

Next item was to attach the BOV vacuum lines to another T-fitting from the line coming out of the intake and connecting to each BOV valve on either side. The manual does not really specify where to put this connection. I ran the lines inside of the bumper and it seems to work pretty well.

Coil packs went back on the engine and then connected the new MSD plugwires. I broke 2 of my stock wires when taking them off. Guess they were worn out after 88k on them. Time to upgrade!

I made sure all of the O2 sensors were re-installed and connected to the harnesses. Then topped off the fluids. Added the oil and coolant back into the engine. And then the moment of truth......... IT FIRED UP ON THE SECOND TRY!!!! Sounds cool with the open downpipes. I have video of it Thanks Dave (mxracercam) for recording the moment. Just trying to get it uploaded for everyone's viewing pleasure (Any sites take a file over 100MB, that seems to be limiting me here....Was gonna put it on my fquick, but it's too big). I could barely hear the turbo's but they were there and put a smile on my face!!! :D :D :D

After I shut it off I noticed some coolant dripping from the LH turbo. DOH! Looks like the outboard water fitting has a leak. Getting a wrench in there is a pain!! Tried tightening it and will see if it still drips in the morning. Also discovered a drip on the inboard coolant banjo fitting. DOH again! At least I can get a wrench on that one. Tightened it but still seems to drip a little. Maybe they just need to be heat cycled? I hope I can get these drips stopped. If not I may have to drop the k-member again to get to these parts....... Or even worse drop the turbo's out...... That will be a pain..... We'll see what happens in the morning.

holy crap that is a tight fit or is it just the angle of the camera? I hope it doesn't move around much.

congrats on getting it fired up.

I think a 1 1/2 or 1 1/4 inch rubber exspansion plug will work pretty good. I have thrown a few in boosted ls1 intakes no trouble to note as of yet. you can get them at places like MAzza's

You vented the valve covers to the inlet tubes/intakes?
Yeah that is what the install manual had me do.

It is tight! Now just gotta fix these leaks. Still dripping this morning...... DOH! May be making a trip out to get some new copper washers and try this again (if I can get a wrench in there....)

I may try that as I don't feel like my metal cover will seal very well. Didn't have any rubber around to adhere to it to help seal the opening. Thanks.

I would have the valve covers vent into a catch can and plug those other holes... Otherwise oil is going to get into your intake and it can slug up the intake and also lean it out under boost...

There are 3 vents on the rocker covers. The front RH one goes through a one way valve to the intake manifold. The two rear ones have long hoses that run forward and down to the intake pipes. You can see them attached in the BOV valve vacuum line pics from yesterday. I may have to add a catch can (or two) into the mix here. But this is how they said to set it up and supposedly it has no problems. We will see.
