My Turbo Install Thread

Was talking to NTIMID8. Gotta see if he has the time as I am near being ready. He came highly recommended for forced induction LS1's.

That guy is a prick and knows NOTHING about LS1's or tuning.. (LMFAO actually it's the complete opposite)

Any updates? I am sure you feel like you should just roll your bed out to the garage at this point, but you're close and its looking real nice.

Just think, youll be a boosted Ls1 in days.....:_slide_:

Yeah, I am still at work today. Geez, let me get home and get cracking on the car again. If you want last night's updates see the previous page of this thread. ;) So close!!!!

General question for anyone. What is a good turbo safe oil? The install manual just says to use a turbo safe oil but does not specify any examples. Can I just continue to use my Mobil 1 5w30? Or do I need a heavier weight? New to this so not sure what to buy. And will be needing it very soon!

Use any Mobil 1 oil is fine...

diesel Oils tend to have alot of high pressure lubrication addidives missing in most modern API/SPI certified oils. Not so good for turbo chargers. They offer a european Spec 15w40 synthetic through amsoil that should have the proper additives. If you worried about seal compatibiltiy and such changing oils will not make an engine sealed with teflon dynamic lips seals leak.

Sweet! I will have to stop by Sam's on the way home! Uh oh, missed that comment.

The car will be daily driven and I don't want to kill anything on it. It has only had Mobil 1 up to this point in it's life.

Updates from Thursday 06Sep07

OK more progress. VERY close to getting it fired up again!

Got the Recetronix fuel pump installed in the stock bucket. Very straightforward install. And the Racetronix instructions were so easy to follow. It went VERY smoothly.

James (n20junkie on LS1tech) came by again to lend a hand. Thanks a ton for your help man! He tied up my brake lines while I installed the fuel pump. We did not use the routing shown in the BMR installation instructions, but found an orientation that seemed to work and still allow my flexible hoses enough slack for steering the car.

Next we put the fuel tank back in the car and plugged everything back in there. Tied up the extra slack on the racetronix hotwire line so it does not hang down or get caught on anything.

Then we moved to the front of the car. Installed the NGK TR6 plugs. And started trying to route the vacuum sensing lines to the BOV's. However we discovered that my 99 intake is not like the newer intake shown in the APS manual. So I will need to figure out a different method to attach into the vacuum circuit. Either splicing into the stock line or attching off of the nipple on the back of the intake and then clamping the stock line onto the T-fitting. We tried that last night but the stock boot was too big for the t-fitting. Maybe if I clamp it that would work...... We pulled off the old PCV system and routed the APS set-up there.

So we moved on to the rest of the front end hardware install. Make sure you install the foam on the sides of the intercooler before putting all of this on. I missed that step initially and had to do some disassembly and then reassembly. It happens when you jump around with subassembling stuff. I should have checked off the steps as I completed them so I could look for missed X-marks on the pages.... May still have to do that to make sure I didn't miss anything else.

Lastly we took off my EGR pump. Now I need to find a block-off plate for that opening on my 99' intake. Any local performance shops carry those?

I still have to remember to attach the racetronix wire to the back of the alternator. Last time I tried I could not get the nut to loosen on the back of the alternator. It just spun the wire that is on there..... Vacuum lines need to be run and the boost sensing hoses to the intake tubes. Put my coilpacks and wires on. Top off fluids and it should be ready to fire up! Very close now!!!!

Looks great Tony. Why not just find an LS6 intake so that you don't have to deal with the !EGR and the vacuum line? You would also need the LS6 valley pan though too to use the LS6 PCV routing.

That was my plan in the longrun. Depends on price if I find one. Trying to minimize the bleeding at this stage as this stuff has added up really quick! My credit card is smoking right now. That and I just want to get it on the road to drive it. Want to take it to NY next weekend to see the family. We'll see if I can do that.

 . o O (Done! Wait a minute...:hmm:...a few parts left over. Whoops!)

As for the EGR, IIRC there's a GM freeze plug that fits nice in the opening. Try searching for that part # over on LS1Tech.

So, Chris was able to help you out with that fuel pump?

Good to hear you're making good progress. :)

Yeah Chris stopped over the other night and got the ring off so I could get the bucket out. Thanks for his contact info.

Would a freeze plug stay put with boost? I may just fab a metal cover and bolt it down using the stock bolt from the EGR tube.

i'm gonna have to say this is a bad idea. i'd give the car some time to flesh out any little problems before taking it on a long trip.
Yeah I was nervous about that too. We'll see. I just REALLY want to drive it. Maybe I will pack lots of tools in case anything happens.....;)
