My Turbo Install Thread

Last night was some more bad news and some good news. Plumbed up my compressor and plugged it in and it stopped after 3 minutes..... DOH! Something is not right there and I need that monster for my valvespring swap and other cutting tools...... :pissed:

On a good note, got the exhaust manifolds, turbo's, and downpipes subassembled. Also put on the oil lines for the turbo's and added the starter heat shield to the RH side Assy.:rockwoot:

Learned a valuable lesson too. There were 2 different length studs provided that only varied by 2mm. Pay CLOSE attention to the stud lengths as I had to go back and find a few that got mixed into my turbo & manifolds subassemblies. I needed the longer ones for the manifolds to the engine. Slowed me down for a bit, but all straightened out now.

this is a great thread, looking good. Its always nice to see pictures throughout the build instead of just before and after. Keep up the good work.

OK! Finally got one of the big items checked off of my list. I got the stock K-Member out all by myself last night! What a chore that was. Not too difficult overall but time consuming and tricky as the motor mounts got hung up on the motor so I ended up unbolting them from the k-member. I originally just unbolted the mounts from the block. I also had to wrestle the lower control arms out of the way as they were holding the stock K-member in place. And the steering rack bolts were tricky. I had to drop the K-member down to allow for those bolts to be taken out and then slide the rack forward and out of the K-member brackets. I already had the brake lines unbolted and nothing got hung up on me. All in all not too bad, and my neighbors probably think I am nuts after letting out a "Woohoo" when I finally got that thing dropped.

Also took the stock mounts apart in preparation for the urethane mounts. Cleaned them and put a coat of paint on them so they look nice. They were a bit rusty looking. Getting closer to hanging the turbo's!!! :D :rockwoot:

And while I was pondering some of the K-Member fun, I also re-routed my hood latch release cable under the fender so it will be out of the engine bay. I forgot to get pics of that though.

Hell all the money you spent on jack stand you could have bought a hoist

Looks good Tony!
Believe me I wish I had a hoist. And SERIOUSLY considered just getting one.

Just curious, but why did you pull the back tires? :hmm:

Oh, and how much to do mine this winter?
Got a nail in the back tire the last day I drove it so they had to come off anyway. And yeah it is to drop the fuel tank.

What do you want me to do to your car? I am getting plenty of practice!

I'd guess it's because he's gotta drop the fuel tank, and no wheels gives more room.

~Alex
You are correct sir.

Looks like it's coming along quickly. Congrats Tony
Thanks Matt! It is progressing, but not fast enough for me. I want it done! We'll see how far I get this weekend. I have no plans other than working on the car for 3 days!!!! Woohoo! OH, and there will be some time for my girl in there too....:naughty:

Made some good progress last night. Many thanks to James (n20junkie on LS1tech) who came down and assisted me. We dropped the oilpan and drilled and tapped the oil feed and drains. We also dropped the fuel tank so I can install my new pump. Prior to his arrival I re-assembled the motor mounts with the urethane inserts. They look nice now that I painted them! My new plug wires and plugs also arrived via UPS today. Woohoo! It's coming together! Should see lots of progress this weekend as I have nothing planned except for working on the car. Hoping to have it as close to complete as I can by Monday.

Anyone know of any muffler shops or other places that can bend up custom exhaust? I would like to run 3" duals (no mufflers for now) out the back of the car. Called a local shop I know but they were not too keen on making me a custom set-up. I don't want it all welded as I need to be able to drop my driveshaft and stuff to get the trans out (as I know there will probably be clutch issues next year). So I am looking for it to be clamped together or something along those lines. I am hoping to have the car done for a roadtrip in the middle of Sept and would like to have some exhaust so the trip is tolerable.

For your exhaust, call Keith's muffler in westland. He does a ton of autorama car's and is a biker/car junkie like all of us here. Does great work and does a lot of custom stuff
