Sprint just dropped the hard news: the phone will be dubbed the HTC EVO 4G, will be released this Summer and it's easily the best specced phone we've ever witnessed. The hardware is of quite obvious HD2 descent, but with Android onboard and some nice aesthetic tweaks, the EVO 4G takes on a life of its own. The handset is centered around a 480 x 800 4.3-inch TFT LCD, with a Snapdragon QSD8650 1GHz processor under the hood (the CDMA version of the QSD8250 in the HD2 and Nexus One), and even a helpful 1GB of built-in memory and 512MB of RAM -- hello app storage! Even the battery is bigger than the HD2, and the camera is an 8 megapixel monstrosity with flash, that's capable of 720p video, and is augmented by a 1.3 megapixel front facing camera for good measure. The phone features HDMI out (though you'll need an adapter for turning it into a TV-familiar HDMI plug), 802.11b/g WiFi, and an 8GB microSD card. There's that still-rare Android 2.1 underneath an updated version of HTC's Sense UI. But... despite all these wild features, what actually sets the EVO 4G apart is the fact that it's Sprint's first 4G phone. The handset runs a combo of EV-DO Rev. A and WiMAX, with calls still being made over CDMA and the EV-DO / WiMAX options for data. Interestingly, it sounds like concurrent data and voice use might be possible for the first time on CDMA carrier in this way (killing AT&T's well-advertised differentiator), though Sprint says that's still in the testing phase. One other new feature is the Sprint hotspot app, another MiFi-style connection sharing number, which is obviously aided greatly by the WiMAX on board and can support up to eight concurrent users. Follow after the break for our hands-on impressions and videos of the phone in action, including an up-close-and-personal test of the touchscreen keyboard. Below you'll find galleries of the phone by its lonesome and up against the Nexus One and iPhone 3G.....

I'm counting the days. I google news for it a few times a week (note my recent post in the new iphone thread with a link I found googling for this). Can't wait for the announcement coming on Wednesday. Also can't wait to use the 4G, Honolulu has 4G and Holly and I will be there first week of July. As if I need more incentive to want to go to Hawaii

The first video it takes will be of the Failberry being smashed to bits.

Hell yea man, I've been waiting for this for months now. My friend has the HTC HD-2 which is the TMobile version of this phone (mostly the same hardware, but inferior software) and it's pretty sick. The video and screen quality are amazing.

I've been eligible for an upgrade since November and although i like my blackberry i know as soon as i get another they'll come out with something better. I'm waiting patiently. :)

I'm willing to pay full price for it. I just got a contract with sprint 2-3 months ago...

I hope the touchscreen capabilities are close to the iPhone...I hate the lack of accuracy on all the other phones.

I have an incredible which has a slightly smaller screen, no front camera and doesn't do HD video. None of those bother me and i get Verizon instead of Sprint.

For those who don't want to leave Verizon, the Motorola Shadow will have pretty much the same specs (and will be available in June... before the EVO). I was going to get an Incredible until I learned about the Shadow. Of course it won't have 4G but then again neither will the EVO in 98% of the US.

yeah Im pretty pissed about that oh well

Damn near all of Texas is covered with 4G, that's like 10% of the US right there

I have faith it'll be here soon. The cities slated for the next part of the roll out get it pretty close. Chicago already has it. Most of Pennsylvania is covered or will be soon and they are hitting Cleveland and Cincinatti. Once the coming soon cities are finished up it makes sense for Detroit to be on the next list.

What specs does it have that the Incredible doesn't?

I gladly pay less money for Sprint service and have no issues with the service.

While that works for you, >80% of my friends have verizon and not all of them have unlimited texting outside of verizon so it is much easier for me to be on the same network as most of the people I talk to. Plus I can have a lower minute plan because of the unlimited member to member calling.

I had Sprint for 5 years, I know that they have good service. Especially since when you are roaming, you are on Verizon's network.
