Martial Arts recommendation

Hey guys,My 9 year old wants to take classes. I don't want this to become a debate about which is better, etc. Just looking for a discipline to better himself, get exercise, etc. I have two questions really:1. Which discipline will help him the most in the real world? Jujitsu is bad ass and probably mandatory for someone pursuing UFC shit, but if u got jumped by a couple of punks in the movie theater parking lot....not so much IMO. Maybe Tae Kwon Do???? Thoughts?2. Recommendations on east side-preferably something up around Shelby Twp. Willing to travel as needed though. I had my oldest in a local establishment years ago and I felt they were more about the money then actually teaching my kid anything. I really want to avoid this. Thx.

His friends told him about it and he wants to do a different sport (previously played tackle football, wrestling & baseball). Looking for something different.I like the idea of him doing it too but for self defense reasons.

honestly...I have studied Tae Kwon Do, kickboxing, and judo. I found I got the most out of judo mostly because it more physically demanding than others. To be honest though....any type of martial arts for a youngster is good. You can pretty much just pick one and go with it.

IDK if its possible, but see if there's a option for Mixed Martial Arts and after a while, you and him could figure out whats best. MMA has a little of everything.

X2 on looking for a MMA gym, there are gyms now training all. IMO that would be the best.

I'd check out the local rec center and community ed programs to see what is offered.
Most programs run 7-8 weeks for a reasonable price. IMO most kids do better with a TKD style, its easy
to start and they feel something has been learned. Judo might be a good fit based on his wrestling experience.
It might take a while to find what resonates/suits him.

Jeet Kun Do if you can find a place. The art of the intercepting fist.

Lee firmly believed you must not be rigid in your mind or fighting method. Lee felt that you need to be able to adapt to any situation that you may encounter and relates it to being like water, "Empty your mind, be formless, shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle and it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot it becomes the teapot. That water can flow, or it can crash. Be water my friend”.

Took karate for 9 years. One of the guys who got his black belt a few years before me owns a dojo in Macomb. He usually runs a free or very inexpensive intro course if you want your kid to check it out. It's like 3 classes to see if he likes it.

I have done kick boxing for many, many years. I have also wrestled for 5 1/2 years, and lightly touched on jujitsu and MMA styled training. If your looking for real world skills, or defense technique, Id suggest either kick boxing or maybe try the MMA. I just dont like the ego's of the guys that take up MMA as a sport (or whatever you want to call it). Ive never done anything involving Tae Kwon Do, but have read and tried to learn much about it deciding if it would be something for me. Tea Kwon Do SEEMS like it would be the best overall form for self defense in most situations, but i cannot really recommend it as ive never studied/learned anything about it other than watching events and reading.
