Looking for advice on a baasement TV/sound system setup

Ill disagree on needing hdmi switching. If you use your tvs smart apps to watch, you can use your tvs digital out to the reciever. Also should work to use the built in hdmi switching on the tv itself in the same manner. This is what i do for most of my stuff.

The value of HDMI switching is highly dependent on the HT setup. If your TV and all A/V sources are simply sitting in the same TV stand/cabinet, then sure - no problem, use the TV's built-in input source selection. But that model doesn't work when your projector is ceiling mounted 50' from all of your A/V sources. Or if you wall mounted the TV and put all of the A/V components in a remote cabinet/rack. In those scenarios (which are fairly common in HT setups), you'd much rather have all of your sources co-located with the receiver, with the receiver doing the HDMI switching, and only needing one 50' HDMI run to the TV/projector -- not many 50' runs. Plus, if a projector is in the mix, it usually only has 1-2 inputs.
YMMV on native TV apps in terms of which apps they support, esp as the TV ages. If all you need is Netflix and Amazon Video, then sure - maybe. It gets harder when you need Plex or less well known app support. Most people I know what to run Rokus, Amazon Fires, Tivos and other media streamers. So I guess it just depends on your needs.

But the op was only looking at doing a smart tv on the wall, even so you can run all the smart apps and bluray off a ps4 or xbox which can be located with the reciever. Of course if you are putting a serious ht together hdmi switching is a must. The xbox one x is pretty slick, runs virtually every major app, bluray, has its own cable box interface, and even support for an ota antenna tuner.
My personal setup is an older onkyo tx-sr875 with a tcl s405, my 2 main devices are my xbox one x and a laptop with an hdmi output. The only thing i use my laptop for are downloaded movies. My reciever is 11 years old, but the dac is are pretty good, and the amp is an absolute beast so im reluctant to upgrade as im not in a huge rush to use atmos yet. The only issue is that i can do 4k with 5.1 or 1080p with 7.1 dts ma/dolby thd, not 4k and 7.1. hasnt been a big deal because there really isnt that much 4k 7.1 content until recently and im not sure many of the streaming services offer it. Im thinking about getting an hdmi fury to be able to split the hdmi signal to be able to get both to work.

Nvidia Shield is the best set-top-box period. I've been running one in every room since they came out. The 1st gen is 3 years old now and Nvidia still keeps it going strong.
